X51 R1 Processor upgrade..

Hello everyone,

Planning to upgrade my X51 r1 from its i5 2320 up to a Intel Core i7-3770 Quad-Core Processor 3.4 GHz 4 Core LGA 1155.

From what ive read an 3770 is the fastest Processor that will run with the R1 motherboard, Is this true?

If so I'm going to pick this one up..

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007SZ0EHE/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Can anyone see any problems I might have with this processor?

Thanks for your help

Sorry forgot to mention you'll need a CPU upgrade with the R2 mobo. Don't quote me on this but I think you can use a 3770 in a R2 mobo - but I cant remember for sure. It should not cost you a packet if you offset the cost of purchase by selling your old mobo and CPU. Don't buy your new R2 mobo from Dell if you can avoid it, they are super expensive. Try to source one somewhere else like ebay or parts people.

Lol, that's for a Area 51. The most impressive desktop you will ever see, no longer made by Dell/Alienware. It will NOT suit a X51. The part number you want is: 0PGRP5 or PGRP5 Here's a link to a ebay seller. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DELL-Alienware-X51-Andromeda-R2-Socket-LGA1150-Motherboard-PGRP5-MS-7796-/221447350114?pt=Motherboards&hash=item338f4a6762

Hmm, after thinking about it, Maybe a better question would be can I upgrade my Motherboard to an R2 one?

Where could I find one, Is it available from Dell?

Thanks for any help.

Hi!

The i7-3770 is in fact the fastest processor supported by the X51 R1. Just in case, here are the Dell Certified processor upgrades for this model:

Part#

JN8M2

  Ivy Bridge i5-3450 Quad Core, 3.1GHz, 6MB

706FY

  SandyBridge i7-2600 Quad Core, 3.4GHz, 8MB

JJ8D9

 Ivy Bridge i7-3770 Quad Core,3.4GHz, 8MB

Regarding the X51 R2 Motherboard upgrade. The hardware for each Alienware model is specific to that platform. Therefore, we don't support this kind of Motherboard upgrade as we can't guarantee it's performance.

A X51 R2 motherboard will work just fine in a X51 R1 case. All the daughter/IO boards and connections are identical. The only difference in the two systems are WiFi, GPU, motherboard and CPU - ALL other components are the same.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm struggling to find an R2 mobo, is there a part number I can use?

I've found this but not sure if its an R1 or 2

http://www.amazon.com/Alienware-LGA1366-System-Motherboard-W51GK/dp/B0056HB92A/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1406288704&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=x51+r2+motherboard

Parts people looks promising, without a part number im a bit lost..

If anyone has any advice about tracking one down, it would be most appreciated.

Thanks again.

Hello again guys,

I've gone ahead and ordered a R2 MOBO and a I7 4790 3.60GH CPU to stick on it.

A bit worried about drivers etc.. How much will I have to re install? and can I just install the same drivers as for the R1 MOBO..

any advice appreciated. Thanks

So, I own the x51 R1 and I just bought the i7 processor you just mentioned. I had it installed by some local computer professionals and they just told me the the motherboard for the x51 isn't compatible with the i7 processor.

well if you bought a forth gen I7 it wont work with a R1 X51  you would need the 3rd gen I7  3770.. if the computer shop it wont  work, they are honestly not aware or just don't wanting or not smart enough to do it lol

Something else you need to take into account.

The title "R1" is a little deceptive.

The X51 "R1" had two models, the first had a second gen intel CPU (2600 series) the second had a third gen intel CPU (3770 series)

If you purchased a 3770 and try to fit it to a mobo that had the 2600 series then that might be your issue, otherwise it's like 89fordprobee said, you've purchased the fourth gen CPU for a third gen motherboard or the computer shop guys are stupid....

IMO - Local computer shop guys and Alienware don't mix, most of them just don't get it unless they are dedicated Alienware repairers.
