Broken Hinge - out of warranty - tips?

So my Alienware M14X hinge just broke after almost 2 years since purchase, I take care of my laptop and was surprise that the hinge still gave-out.

I'm currently in Dubai for 1 more month and called a few DELL certified service centers here and they told me that I have to replace the whole monitor which will cost me around 400 USD (LOL!). I told them that I could purchase the hinge online and they told me that the hinges are glued to the monitor and there is no chance that it could be replaced separately.

Online hinges:

Should I just purchase this hinge and try to fix it myself? But I couldn't find any youtube tutorials on how to replace the hinge -HELP!

Or should I buy the complete LCD set for $200 online? Because there is just no way I'm going to get this laptop fix locally here in Dubai for double the price of $400.

Please guys help me out? What should I do? Any better solutions?

After checking online I realised a lot of people also have this problem, and whats even more annoying is that alienware is fixing m11x but not acknowledging the problem with the m14x... wear and tear really? I barely move my laptop out of the desk and I often just leave the screen open...

How much would it cost you to bring the $200 LCD assembly to your place? (I mean, you are planning to get it from the U.S aren't you?)

I knew someone that had the left hinge break and he purchased a set online for about $20 and had no problem replacing them. He did not find them to be glued on, there were just screws holding everything. I would just buy a set of hinges and do it yourself. There is a video on youtube that shows how to replace the screen that should show you everything you need to do this yourself in about an hour. The Dell Service manual for your laptop is located here: ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_alienware_laptops/alienware-m14x_service%20manual_en-us.pdf I hope this helps

Hi there,

I have also had this happen today with my M14x r2 Alienware laptop.

I'm not impressed at all, I've owned laptops for up to eight years, and never had an issue with them, yet this 1600 euro machine I bought in August 2012 has this issue after less than a year and a half. I read through the various threads, and have ordered the hinges from pchub, as I can't afford to lose access to my computer for several days, and am not going to shell out €400 for a repair on something.

But not impressed with this, even as if I had the extended warranty, hinges would not be covered, and I'd still be in the same situation.

So I'll wait for the part comes in the post, and try and fix this, but I'm unlikely to buy an alienware again after this.
