Alienware 14 Briefly Freezing on Startup

Alright, so for the past week and a half or so my Alienware 14 will boot up perfectly fine, but after about a minute or so of being on the fan will nearly explode from spinning up so loud, and I the computer completely locks up, no mouse movement or loading on any games/webpages. This will all last for about 10 seconds or so and then everything is perfectly normal again. My first thought was the fan is clogged up with dust and choking to death, so I dissected the computer and cleaned the fan with compressed air. Turns out the fan was actually pretty dusty, (first time cleaning it) but this did not solve anything. The next suggestion I found online was to run a full hard drive test in DOS, and nothing came up there either. I have also ran several virus sweeps to no avail, so why can't my laptop turn on without exploding every time?

Edit: I forgot to mention this whole ordeal started happening the moment after I did a windows update. Not sure if it's a coincidence or not, but I feel it's still worth mentioning.

I´ve got:

BIOS-Version/-Date: Alienware A04, 12.08.2013

SMBIOS-Version: 2.7

Edit: Just used the hotfix from here:

It worked. Thanks. :)

If it is indeed the Windows update causing the issue with the fans.

The best course of action would be performing a Windows System Restore to a point prior to the update, that way you can fix it without losing any of your personal files.

Let me know how it goes.

Nope, even after reverting back it still does its thing.

I have the exactly same problem with my Alienware14. It also freezes for 10 sec. in the same way you discribed it after booting up . And it startet after the last WIndows Update.

Today (26.02.15) they released a new Windows Update however it didt fix the problem.

Edit:  I use the program "Rainmeter" (beta-version) for desktop customisation. I thought that this could be the only reason for the freezing.

I do not use Rainmeter, so it is not the cause of the problem.

Hello. I'm having the exact issue you described on an Alienware 17. Ran diagnostics and whatnot, no problems found. I just ran windows update and I still got the issue when starting up.

I was having the same issue with my Alienware 18 as well, the fan would go 100% and everything would lock up.  I uninstalled the Dell Support Assistant and the problem was solved.  The same as this existing post en.community.dell.com/.../19621027
