AW3225QF, flickering, this is ridicolous!

Alienware 32 4K QD OLED Gaming Monitor AW3225QF

Alienware 32 4K QD OLED Gaming Monitor AW3225QF

I got this monitor at the day one in my country. I spent over 1200€ to have a monitor with a many issues. Ok after the last update i can turn off the dolby vision, but it's ridicolus often i have flickering, especially in hdr mode, or while scroll windows page and i watch a video on youtube. I tried to change cable, disable g-sync, limite the fps but the problem is the same. Now i contact the assistance, they answer me to send me a new monitor. Ok but for what? I think the problem can fix only with a new firmware and i don't want to receive a regenerate unit.

here some examples about my flickering:

It is a known issue on all current OLED panels. Not sure if Dell can do much about it (would be great if it could be somehow mitigated, but not sure if much can be done).

What helps beyond obviously disabling VRR (which isn't a desirable solution), is to keep framerate fluctuations as low as can be. This could be achieved by:

- aiming to increase minimum framerates, for instance by lowering graphics settings, or.. eventually using a faster CPU/GPU. Not a guaranteed solution as some games just stutter or substantially fluctuate frametimes pretty much no matter what you do. But it can help.

- capping max fps in the in-game settings. If you cap them to 120fps, for instance, VRR flicker should get much less noticeable, at the expense of a lower framerate on the high end.

The lower the framerate fluctuations, the less VRR flicker there is.

The flickering in the third video is actually related to Nvidia drivers and Chromium browsers, it is mentioned in the driver notes and is affecting other monitors including my IPS LG monitor so that isn't a Dell issue.

The first two are OLED VRR flicker which is unfortunately just a technological weakness of QD-OLED, has been there for years now, no easy fix for it I'm afraid until Samsung redesign their panels.

Have the same issue on  my Alienware AW3423DWF... As is see other brands like gigabyte can be better at VRR and flickering. My model flicker evene with constant 100 fps when gsync is enabled... I think i will return it... Colors and contrast are perfect but ruined by flickering... and i did not pay such ,money to not use vrr and stick to old vsync stuttering....

@Aureumchaos my unit has flickering also if i disable VRR and G-sync, and limit fps to 120. I test the flickering by this site, and i can see flash the greey color

Hello there i encouter the same issue here with a AW3225QF, already have a AW3423DW (an also a s95b samsung oled TV => respectively set at 144hz for the aw34 and 120hz for the oled tv), i was mad about it, was on the fence to return it but i had a week end to test stuff and my conclusion:

The point is this kind of panel, very high refresh rate, will go crazy with VRR, you can check it with enabling in osd "refresh rate counter" and seeing the Hz goind wild (= crazy flickering) due to their max range => 240Hz if you can't keep you're frame rate as close as possible to their refresh rate. And even if you got a 4090 you wont be really able to come close to have 200+ fps in modern AAA game without tweaking downe hard the settings.

Set you're panel at 120hz => refresh rate may still bounce a lot but at a far less degree = flicker mostly gone.

Every 32inch 4K high refresh rate panel will have the same behaviour, all brand (you can find same post on reddit, other forum etc.. will ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte) it's due to the refresh rate.

This as nothing to do with normal vrr flicker during loading screen for example (all oled go it)

So when next gen of GPU will come, we will use our panel at their full potential (hoping so)
