Aurora R15, looking to upgrade from stock fan

Latitude 7410

Latitude 7410

Howdy folks

I'm looking to upgrade my Alienware R15 cooling from the stock fan. I've been experiencing PC shutdowns when playing games, and I have noticed CPU temperatures between 80-84 C and I would like to try upgrading to an AIO cooling solution. I had no clue this would be of hassle of an upgrade. I've done some research on my issue and would like to share some points.

- Alienware R15 service manual does not specify what part number is used for their cooling AIO. Sure does tell  you how to remove/add the AIO.

- Bought the NZXT 240MM AIO liquid cooler and learned the hardway that you can't mount the radiator on the R15. I Returned it.

- There seems to be no inidication of compatible AIOs inregards with the alienware R15.

- Opened a support case with Dell. They are will to sell me theA lienware AIO cooler, however they are currently out of stock and would get back to me when the alienware AIO cooler is back in stock.

This process has been frustating, as I did not expect such a hassile for a simple upgrade. It seems the only solution was to have this option selected when purchasing the R15 (I somehow missed this).

Could anyone share a compatible third party AIO cooler that actually fits, or if that is such a thing? I don't have faith that AIO part will be in stock. What are some other solutions yall can think of?

Thanks!

This photo is an Aurora R13, but I'm pretty sure you could do the same 240mm front mount in the R15. The top bracket in the R15 has special mounting clips, so that would require OEM Dell equipment. I believe the cooler in the photo is Arctic Liquid Freezer II 240mm.

@ProfessorW00d Thanks for sharing.

The front panel (which would be the right side of this picture) also uses clips for the  2 front fans. In order to mount the 240MM radiator on the right, I would need to use screws? Which is what I don't think the Alienware R15 can do. I don't see pre-drilled holes for mounting?

@redxps630 cryotech version? How many alienware AIO versions are there? What's the benefit for using cryotech?

Thanks!

as you see in my 1st reply there are two versions: non cryo-tech vs cryo-tech.  Dell has been doing this since R13.  Dell claims the cryo-tech has a slightly thicker radiator and slightly better cooling than the other.  I suspect it is more marketing hype though.  the main attraction of cryo-tech is LED of the pump.  the non-cryo does not have it.  in my third answer you can see the eBay price for cryo is 50% more than the non-cryo.

@aldoiscool   I don't have an R15, so I cannot give a specific resolution to your mounting issues. You may just have to hone your modding skills. From just looking at your photo, at a bare minimum, with the existing fans you could mount a 240mm radiator to the top fan and let it hang down in front of the lower fan. The air flow regime would not be ideal, but it would be better than your current pancake fan cooler. The bottom SSD bracket would probably need to go. Ideally, if you can get the fans mounted properly for 240mm spacing, the radiator mounts to the fans . . . or through the fans.

The customer-support-rep gave the dreaded reply - "We are out of stock; please buy the liquid cpu cooler from retail stores like Amazon".

I was able to install corsair liquid cpu cooler (https://www.corsair.com/us/en/p/cpu-coolers/cw-9060068-ww/icue-h100i-elite-capellix-xt-liquid-cpu-cooler) to the existing 240mm radiator bracket (same radiator size as before).

There are few problems with this model:

1. I found the lack of space to store the iCUE command core box rather frustrating.

2. After the bootup, the SupportAssist complains about 3 fans (D0501 failure). Based on my 2 days of testing, the CPU temperatures are steadily within 30-40C range and not seeing any issues.

It might never be the same as before in terms of user experience - I feel the constant urge to check on the CPU temperature. On a positive note,  it feels better to at least have the PC running.

Have the same issue like u. Don’t know how to install 3rd party cpu cooling.  I brought it with i9-13700 cpu, can’t believe they give me a little fan for cooling. Their original cooling just a little pricey .  I wonder have u solved the issue with 3rd party cooling yet?
