Aurora R10, 1000W PSU, 8 pin EPS connector

So I have been looking at my motherboard, to determine if in the future I can move over the power supply to a different case and motherboard.

Now I noticed the 8 pin EPS connector that provide extra power to the board, only has 6 wires connected to it.

It's connected to an 8 pin socket, but only 3 x 12 Volt is supplied. 3 yellow, 3 black. Should be 4 yellow, 4 black.

Pretty disappointed, looks like I will have to purchase a 1000 Watt PSU because the included power cables to the modular power supply are not populated to the ATX 2.0 standard, but instead to a DELL OEM sub standard.

@Vanadiel

Its not funny to me that the service manual doesn't mention specific cable numbers and what ports they go into.  Other OEM vendors Like HP and Oracle and IBM and Lenovo as well as Retail Vendors Like ASUS, MSI, ASROCK, GIGABYTE, ACER,EVGA, do list this information in service manuals. Average user and repair tech won't know this either.  I often say if I did not have bad experience I would have no experience whatsoever.  Like the time I put a $1000 486  cpu in the socket incorrectly and turned on the PC.  The cpu shattered like glass.  When I told my boss what happened he told me to put the cpu back in the box and send to INTEL and to pay closer attention and never do that again. That was in 1994.  INTEL did not question or refuse an RMA because we were purchasing several hundred processors each month.  End users would not be so lucky.

You will need an adapter if you have optional optical drive.

I was contacted on eBay, owner bought a used 850w, came w/all cables accept the GPU_PWR cable, asked me if I could make a replica (~18" inches), so I did

PTDC0010 - Copy.JPG

Aurora full cable set photo (of 850w) shows the GPU & CPU cables are about the same length

20747_s-l1600.jpg

it also shows the 24pin is what, 14" inches? If u intend to transfer that 1000w u have into a new case, one issue might be that items like GPU/CPU/24pin could turn out to be too short. The SATA look short too

Generally, when buying a standard 850/1000 aftermarket PSU, cables like CPU tend to be 24"-26" long, 24pin 24", PCI-E 24", decent length SATA

If u send me a PM, I could go over details on how I could help you turn your CPU into an 8-wire (you measure cable/wire length), I send a blk+ylw wire + blk 6pin (my last red 6pin is in photo). U work them into your cable (since the sleeve ends are held by fabric tape) … … ... the issue for u would then be that even if it becomes an 8-wire that way, it'd be a short ~18", where depending on whatever future case u intend to use it might still be 6"-8" too short … that goes for almost all the rest of the cables like 24pin SATA etc … u might be forced into an aftrmrkt PSU by virtue of needing longer cables, it depends on the case u wanna use. I don't log-in here often, prolly best to post in this thread if u PM'd me

@Vanadiel

They are all six pin but they are color coded on both ends. On my 1000W they also have flimsy tags that say R1 R2 R3 R4 etc.

This is all very very very poorly documented in the offficial service manuals.

You can get around the length by cable mod extension cables, as long as the motherboard connectors follow the standard.

PSU extension cable

The problem with turning the 6 wire EPS into an 8 wire EPS is that you will need to get 2 extra wires from another PSU connector, to meet the official requirements for the 8 wire EPS connector, which is 7 Amps per circuit for a total of 28 Amps at +12 volts. (336 Watts).

You would basically have to have the 8 pin on the motherboard side, and 2 x 6 pin on the PSU side, each plugged into a 6 pin PSU connector.

I just think it's easier and more future proof to purchase a new PSU. You can get a 850 Watt PSU from Corsair or EVGA for around $100 when they go on sale.

I would recommend picking one up that has 2 x 8 PIN EPS, in a 4 + 4 configuration. More and more motherboards these days require an 8,  8 + 4, and some 2 x 8 for extra power to the VRM section.

Above is the qwik-fix

I don't use cable extensions, but yes, agreed they'd do the trick

Below's a white BitFenix Alchemy 2.0 set I'd modded back when I had my OEM Delta (I still have that white set put away in a box) … which is to say that with a little help it's possible to get the Aurora set-up as an 8, 8+4, 8+8 CPU cable-config so long as someone does the cables for it > I make cables so to me these aren't issues < but agreed it's best to go w/an aftrmrkt unit & cables when it isn't an Alien case being used (& sometimes best even when it is one)
