Area-51 R5, supporting CPUs?

I think this is my MB. Nothing other than storage has been upgraded. All original.

MS-7A87 Dell Alienware AREA-51 R5 Intel Chipset X299 Socket LGA2011 Motherboard N4R4N Intel LGA2011 Motherboards

W/i7 7800x CPU

Is it truly LGA2011?

What are my options for upgrading CPU? trying to stay around $400-$500

Are different LGA sockets cross compatible?

Considering the age, likely not economical to upgrade.

Different LGA sockets are not cross compatible. Where are you getting the information about your motherboard and CPU socket? According to this Intel Spec Sheet the i7-7800X used the LGA 2066 socket.

If you have the LGA 2066 socket you can upgrade to i9-9980XE processor . . . 10th Gen is not supported. You should confirm your motherboard CPU socket before purchasing a new CPU.

You can use CPU-Z to detect your motherboard CPU socket.

Re: I think this is my MB

ASSY,CRD,PLN,SKL,AREA-51 R5. $629.99

your mobo is indeed for A51 R5.  chipset is indeed X299.  But its socket is not LGA2011.

X299 chipset uses LGA2066 socket.

Edit: LGA2011-v3 socket is in A51 R2, X99 chipset.

LGA2011 socket is for X79 chipset in Aurora R4 for example.

9980XE mentioned by professor is validated by A51 R5 user

@redxps630   I thought it was the LGA2011 socket that had the V3 iteration. I think LGA2066 lives on its own in X299. Area-51 R2 had the LGA2011 V3 and X99 chipset.

A51 R4 HJ5Y7 & R5 N4R4N are nearly identical mthrbrds, but the R4 can not CPU upgrade, so check the printed mthrbrd labels for your part#, or, look at the rear I/O shield, it'll say R4 or R5 on it

R5 mthrbrd can CPU upgrade from 7800x > 9800x & better IF you're at BIOS version 1.0.0.1029, 2.00 or higher (2.0.x) .. & as PWood said, 10th Gen (10900x etc) not supported do to no Bios support (like the R4, lol, so very uncool). If your Bios is an older 1.1.x version then u must flash the Bios w/ the newer linked version using the 7800x 1st to do so B4 you can install & use a 9-Series chip
