Windows XP fails to update

I have here a six-year-old Dell Inspiron 1520 running Windows XP SP3, from which I have just removed about six viruses. Problem is, I still can't get it to update Windows. It downloads the updates, but they never take. I have run the Microsoft Windows Update "Fix it" at https://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update. Unfortunately, this does not work. Instead, it reports "Cryptographic service components are not registered". I have gone on to run Fix it 50691 (see https://support.microsoft.com/kb/958045.) Still, it does not work. The instructions from MS then say to call support.

So here I am. Any suggestions?

rfritz33,

Make copies of files and folders that you cannot afford to lose. This should be a normal practice.

Set your bios to be able to boot off the cd.

Insert your CD and press any key, when prompted, to get the computer to boot off of the CD

Check yes for the agreement.

Choose repair.

Computer will run for approx 37 minutes. You might think that you will lose things. If you think you will, then back up your files. I didn't lose anything. It will repair your computer to have all the origional Windows componets.

Follow the instructions, then it will prompt you to restart your computer.

Then remember you will need to go to Microsoft for your Windows updates.

***You will have to be the Administrator to do this***

Hope this helps.

XP is at End of Life in April and its installation and continued use should be avoided for more information see:

XP is 3 Windows versions behind and as you have just experienced prone to security exploits and infection. The situation will be even worse when Microsoft stop supporting it. Many people have stated update issues recently especially with Windows XP clean installs.

Its time to upgrade to a newer version of Windows. This unit was sold by Dell as Vista capable and should run Windows 7 or 8.1 64 Bit without any problems providing it has enough RAM. Follow Windows Reinstallation Guide/A Clean Install of Windows 7/8.1:

http://philipyip.wordpress.com/dell-community-forums/

The unofficial driver set here will help with your Windows 7 64 Bit installation:

http://philipyip.wordpress.com/unofficial-driver-sets/inspiron-laptops-windows-7/inspiron-1520-windows-7-64-bit/

For Windows 8.1 many drivers will be inbuilt but you can use the same drivers but omit system utilities, OS Updates, Wireless Card which have inbuilt drivers. The Broadcom Bluetooth Update should cover the Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth module if its installed in your system.

Thank you. But, alas, that did not work. Any more things to try?

Thanks. I tried that and, alas, it did not work. Do you have any more thoughts?

[Added] But wait! I'm rebooting the system and it's doing…something. Maybe it will work this time.

No, in fact, it just tries to update when shut down, but it never succeeds; it just takes lots of time shutting down. Any more thoughts.

Thanks. I'll find a disk (I don't think we ever had one for that system) and try that.
