What windows 7 ultimate do we need ? 32 or 64 bit
I have a Dell XPS 3 WINDOWS XP home edition desktop & a Dell E 1705 laptop windows xp professional
There are 2 versions of Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit and 64 bit .I am not sure which version we need.
I tried windows 8.0 pro on my laptop and immediately took it out as we hated it. My wife's computer Dell xps 8300 has windows ultimate 7 and works well
Which version do we need to do complete installation from a clean hard drive ?

HI WORF,
match what version you had in XP, usually 32bit unless otherwise specified:
You can always use 32bit even on a 64bit system, may run faster, but DO NOT install 64bit on a 32bit system. They freeze up.

I have tested the Inspiron E1705/9400 with Windows 7 32 Bit, Windows 7 64 Bit, Windows 8.1 32 Bit and Windows 8.1 64 Bit.
The 64 Bit version of Windows 7 or 8.1 will only work if a T7200, T7400 or T7600 Intel processor is installed. In either case the maximum memory that can be installed in the system is 4 GB with 3.25 GB useable limited by the chipset so there is little advantage to installation of the 64 Bit OS as it cannot address more RAM.
I have provided a link to updated system drivers here.
*64 Bit compatibility depends on the processor installed.
Follow my A Clean Install of Windows guide for best results:
Note that this is a Media Direct System and the Media Direct partitions should be set up before installation of Windows.
