Sound Problem with Windows 7/64-Bit for Dimension 5150/E510
Dear all,
I have successfully installed Win7/64-Bit on my Dell 5150 or like in US E510. Everything works fine except that sometimes the sound suddenly stops playing. Only log-off and log-in helps here. Any idea, how to solve this issue, as Dell has no driver "updates" for Windows 7 at all, especially not for the audio driver.
Thanks for your help!

You might try the Dell Vista driver. It's said to be for Vista 32bit, but it just might work. I'm using the Dell Vista 32bit monitor driver on my 64bit system now.

Your only hope is the Dell Vista 32 bit driver since Dell does not support Vista 64 bit or Windows 7 any version.
If the Dell Vista 32 bit driver does not work you are looking at installing a PCI sound card that is Windows 7 compatible. Users have tried non-Dell SigmaTel (now called IDT) drivers and they will either not install or not work correctly.
I have an E510 and it will never get any more than the Vista 32 bit that I have installed. The next "upgrade" will be the trash can when it finally fails. It's "old technology" that was designed for XP.
(I thought I answered this on the Desktop hardware section).

Hi

I have check for 32\64 bit sound drivers for the E510\5150 Dell does have the 32\64 bit Vista driver for it ,you can download it from this link the 32\64 bit drivers is in the same package the 32\64 bit driver should work for windows 7 32\64 bit but if you have problems with the driver and windows 7 you are your own support for it !!!

My driver came from the CD that shipped with the monitor. So if a Vista 64bit driver was on there, then that's what I'm using. Thanks for clarifying.

Hi JSKTX
Your welcome glad to help when i can .
The CD that came with my Dell S2209W monitor has drivers for XP 32 bit XP Pro 64 and up to Vista 32\64 bit when i installed 7 64 bit it would not load the 32 bit driver so i selected the Vista 64 bit driver and it installed it with no problems the Vista 32 bit driver said the 7 64 bit OS was not supported with the 32 bit driver.
When i read your post i thought it odd you said the 32 bit driver worked so i checked the drivers download for your monitor and read the version.txt before i posted the outcome to you !!
Good Luck

There is no "official" Dell support for Windows 7 32/64 bit and Vista 64 bit on the Dell downloads for the E510/5150. I have an E510 and we have seen many problems with the Dell SigmaTel chips either not working or not working correctly when the "official" Dell driver for a particular model is not available. That is what I base my responses on, there MAY be some other driver that will work but if it's not listed in the Dell downloads I won't go any further with my recommendations.

Hi
This list came from the link in my other post , it is the link to the Dell Vista 32\64 bit driver for the E510\5150 Dimension it was not linked to any other computer in this list . this is the OFFICIAL Dell SigmaTel chip 32\64 bit driver for the E510\5150 all you have to do is read the compatibility list in the link i posted .!! So all i can do is show the list as it is no more or no less . But Dell does not "support" windows 7 or Vista 64 bit because the OS was not installed by Dell !!!

My E510 came with XP Media Center Edition. They discontinued the E510's before Vista came out, but on the E510 downloads it does show Vista 32 bit, however the SigmaTel driver listed is for Vista 32 and 64 bit. Dell does not list the driver you linked in the E510/5150 drivers list.
When Vista first came out Dell did not have a Vista driver for the E510 and it was a major issue on the old users forum audio section until they finally came out with a Vista driver - but it did not have the System Mixer function and it became another sore point with users. A Dell moderator told me they did not include the system mixer function because it was handled differently in Vista from XP and for whatever reason only known to Dell they didn't include that function at the time.
It wasn't an issue for me as I had installed a PCI SoundBlaster Audigy SE sound card and had all the functions, except the connection to the front panel headphone/mic but that wasn't a problem for me.

Hi C3PO5,
I have installed the Sigma driver fro your URL
... sorry to tell you, that I still have the same problem that it might happen that the sound stops playing (e.g. when opening mp3 with VLC and afterwards opening Firefox ... sounds will stop, whereas VLC will proceed acting).
Well, may I found a soundcard working with Win7 which will solve my issues :emotion-3:!
Thanks for your help and many greetings, Markus

Those of you trying to get your e510 and e521's running windows 7...did you run the windows 7 upgrade advisor? If so, what results did it produce? For me, it says I need additional harddrive space, which isn't a problem once I move all my HD video files. A few programs won't work. And printer drivers for my AIO 966 printer. If you got the same results, then it sounds like windows 7 just won't work on these machines.

I have Vista 32 bit running on my E510 and if I needed Win 7 for it, which I don't, I wouldn't be afraid to install Win 7 32 bit. I can't say the same for the 64 bit version. The E510 will only take 4GB of RAM, maximum, so there is no reason to install 64 bit version (the only REAL reason is the ability to address more than 4GB of RAM).
As far as peripherals, some do not support Vista/Win 7 and that can be a concern in upgrading. The software shouldn't really be an issue if it works in Vista and/or you can run it in a Windows XP compatibility mode. Actually, Win 7 will run XP applications in the native Win 7 mode better than Vista ane one of Microsoft's selling points for XP users.
