Like fireberd said... Otherwise Microsoft tell you how to disable and reenable system restore
here. Disable, reboot, enable, reboot to clear the existing restore points.
Thanks for the link but I still don't see what I want. I don't want to disable my system restore at all - just want to get rid of some of those restore points I have. I know time will take care of that but, as I said, I was once told how to do it myself. And it was simple! How quickly one forgets when they grow older.
You must not have done a "clean" install. If you do a "clean" install you reformat the hard drive and install Windows, chipset drivers, drivers, applications software, etc. It sounds like you just reinstalled Windows over the existing install.
If you do a "clean" install all the old restore points will be gone.
I did do a clean install. No doubt about it! I did it last Saturday. What I have now are 5 or 6 restore poiints per day for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Also the usual once per day for yesterday and today. I know there is a way to get rid of all restore points and create a new one - I did it once after receiving instructions about 6 months ago,. I have no trouble creating a new restore point - just getting rid of the old ones! I have a reatively small hard drive - 17GB. I want to free up some space by keeping the restore points at a minimum.
Thanks - I could do that but it still doesn't do what I did before - someone here in the forum told me how. I know your intentions are good and I do appreciate your interest. Unless someone comes up with something else I will just let it drop for now.
If you want to get rid of the older restore points, you can try reducing the amount of disk space you allocate for SR. The adjustment slide is in the same screen where you turn it on and off.
If you want to clean ALL (including the last one) restore points right click on MY COMPUTER/SYSTEM RESTORE TAB/Turn off System Restore/Apply/OK. That will clean your hard drive of all System restore points, of course you can then turn System Restore ON back again if you wish.
Great! That is just what I wanted and it did it well. Thanks so very much. I knew I wasn't completely crazy. You can bet I will copy your instructions and keep them.

Bessie,
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Systems Tools -> Disk Cleanup -> More Options tab - System Restore section at the bottom.
