Failed install - constant reboots, fell back to XP 3X

Ive noticed in the forums other users that have also had this problem:
- tried the upgrade from XP MCE to VISTA Home Premium
- gets part way through the install and reboots
- constantly reboots
- i can stop it by selected Startup recovery, but it just thrashes the hard drive for up to 32 hours (yes 32)
- no choice but to roll back to prior OS

This is on my 3 month old Dimension 9200!  Ive now done this 3 times - same cr@ppy results.  What a waste of time.  Some users have done a clean install, but then I really dont want to reinstall everything thereafter.  Is there no other solution????  I was really looking forward to VISTA but MS or Dell need to fix this - this is unacceptable.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried calling Dell tech support? After being on the phone with them for over 90 minutes, I decided not to upgrade from XPMCE to Vista Home Premium. Seems that my Inspiron E1705 is "compatible" with Vista but won't run all of the "features" and when I tried to upgrade my hardware, Dell sold me the wrong part. XPMCE is a great operating system and will probably work much better on your computer than Vista ever will until you buy a new computer with Vista installed. BTW, stay away from Vista Home Basic, a factory authorized service tech told me that it is a real dog. Sorry for your troubles. It sure can be frustrating trying to keep up with the latest stuff.

Farmer, but as i just bought this 9200 dimension from dell, it better be compatible.  Anyways thanks to keithg2 here, (see my other post on dual boot), I managed to circumvent the "upgrade process" by doing a clean install to a new partition.  Now I can use my reliable xp whilst learning with vista, and can easily reboot to either os.  Thanks.
