Remark:   Open Office, now called Apache Open Office, was once the primary FREE alternative suite to Microsoft Office.  It has been updated annually for the past several years.

Another FREE alternative is LibreOffice https://www.libreoffice.org/  which is updated much more frequently.  

I am not in a position to compare the two... I am continuing to use Open Office out of familiarity and loyalty... but if I didn't already have OpenOffice, I'd definitely give LibreOffice a try.
