Hi gailrenee,

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt

New HijackThis log.

gailrenee,

Try re-downloading the file from Microsoft and see if it will work again. That is the file that will install Recovery Console. It's possible that the last download could have been interrupted and become corrupt, so let's see if a fresh download will fix that problem. Everything was looking normal until the "is not a valid win32 application" message.

Be sure to delete the copy you already have before downloading the new one. Let me know how it goes.

Logs look good so far.

Run an online virus scan called Kaspersky from HERE.

  • 1. At the main page. Press on " Accept". After reading the contents.

    2. At the next window Select Update. Allow the Database to update.

Note: If prompted to run or update your Java, then follow the prompts to do so. Kaspersky requires Java to run.

    3. Once the Database has finished, under the Scan icon Select My Computer to start the scan. The scan may take a few minutes to complete.

    4. Select Scan Report.

    5. If any threats were found they will appear in the report

    6. Select "Save error report as"

Then in the file name just type in kaspersky

Under "save as type" select text .txt

    Save it to your Desktop.

Copy and post the results of the Kaspersky Online scan. If no threats were found then report that as well

gailrenee,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

The only threat showing in the Kaspersky log is this line:

C:\Documents and Settings\Gail Wilczewski\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{4E3254D7-522A-412A-9296-3F4767B3A2CB}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbx Suspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen 1

This shows that your inbox contains infected mail. This will need to be deleted via Outlook Express.

Aside from that, you may empty out your Quarantine folder here:

C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 12\ Quarantine

Note: I would empty the contents of the folder, not delete the folder. You may do this by navigating to the folder, pressing Ctrl + A to select all files then press the delete key.

After this has been done, reboot the PC and let me know how everything is running.

no problem, i appreciate you taking the time as it is...   anyway, is the problem in a individual email or with the program?  should i reinstall outlook express?  (basically just a quick question, you don't have to go through that with me....  worse comes to worse i'll use microsoft outlook)

and i deleted the quarantine folder's contents.  so far, so good.  when i initially got this virus, i couldn't do anything, it kept shutting down on its own with a blue screen, and error messages that i couldn't get rid of.  i ran the malwarebyte program per bugbatter, and that worked wonders..  and i do appreciate the follow up and clearing up everything else, as well as going over my endless logs..

yet again, thank you...  and sorry to be such a pain...

sorry to be a pain, but just to verify (i did say i was pretty much computer  illiterate) what exactly should i run in the future?  and the recovery, and combofix...  karpensky and malwarebytes should i continue to use these, should i remove any?   were these just for this specified problem?

i went through this kind of blindly, just following without comprehension.  it comes naturally.  you don't have to go into detail, or even answer this, you have helped so much..  just wanted to thank you for your time and effort...  you didn't know what you got into when you answered my post, did you?

Don't worry, you haven't been a pain at all.

I believe the problem will be with a single email, though I have no idea which one. I would go through and clear out all emails if possible.

How is everything else running?
