HELP! Computer keeps freezing up (among other problems) Hijackthis Log

Hi everyone,
For the past week or so my computer has been having several issues. Mainly feeezing up while browsing online. Also the cursor will all of the sudden stop being active or do nothing when i click anywhere. I have a dell insiron 6000 and the scroll down on the touchpad will sporadically stop functioning. Sometimes just the page will have problems and after I close it I can open a new one and it will function properly. Other times everything is frozen and the mouse will move around but won't click anything, alt+ctrl+del will open up the task manager but it will not function or show any information, and pressing alt+ctrl+del again will not restart my computer. When this happens I have to take out the battery in order to restart, crossing my fingers that it will start up properly. Also sometimes at startup, after everything has loaded the cursor icon will remain as an hourglass and I will not be able to click anything. It seems like a virus but it comes and goes, and seems to be worse when i'm browsing with Mozilla Firefox (2.0.0.4) than when I use IE (6.0). This is unfortunate because I use my computer for quite a bit of my business and I prefer to use Firefox. Also I am operating on Windows XP. I want to get rid of this before it gets out of control, Please help!!! I have scanned with spybot and adaware recently and removed some spyware but nothing critical. My Hijackthis log is below. 1. Please download the Killbox.
  • 1)Save it to the desktop
    2) Rt Click->>Extract all->.Extract it to your Desktop
    3) Double Click Killbox.exe to run it
    4)Select " Delete on Reboot", and then select "All files".
    5) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ali.exe

    6) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose " Paste from Clipboard".
    7) Click the red-and-white " Delete File" button.  Click " Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt.  Click " No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
2. Rerun Hijackthis (scan only) and place checks beside the following enetries
  • O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*Bandook] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ali.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Bandook] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ali.exe
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
Close all other open windows except Hijackthis and Select " Fix checked"

Close Hijackthis ->> Reboot your PC ->> Rerun Hijackthis and post a fresh Hijackthis log

The infection you have normally targets email passwords. See this LINK

However since one of your accounts has been compromised.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.

i am freaking out right now because someone just logged into my paypal account and paid themselves ALOT of money. ive already reported it to paypal and my bank so i do not think they are getting away with it. do these recent computer problems reflect someone getting into my system and somehow hijacking my passwords? what advice do you have to make sure no one is still lurking in my system and to prevent this or anything like this from happeningthe only future? what is the best form of virus and hacker protection for my computer? i think it was someone on ebay who sent me an email with a link in it of what they claimed was a photo, asking me to look at it and see if it was the same as an item i had for sale. i stupidly opened the link and it was an executable file, i think it ended in .cpl, could this have been the root of all this evil? that is the only suspicious thing i can recall as of late.
 
i have done all the steps and removed that file as you instructed, thank you so much for your help. this file however, O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*Bandook] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ali.exe, did not appear in the list when i did the first scan so it wasn't removed.

i think i would like to try to clean up my system. i believe they stole my email password, which was the same login information as my paypal account. that was a stupid mistake and i now have different passwords for everything. i do use my computer for a lot of financing, paying bills, receiving payments, etc. but i have not noticed any other suspicious activity and i do think that they hacked into my paypal by getting my email logon info, and with financial security being what it is today it is fairly simple to stop these transactions dead in their tracks, or if needed file a claim and be reissued funds form any unauthorized transaction. i'm planning on getting a mac soon anyway. but for now i'd love it if you would help me clean up my system and get it protected. thanks again for all your help!

Alright.

1. *NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.

  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced." deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
2. Run an online virus scan called Kaspersky from HERE.
  • 1. Click on " Kaspersky Online Scanner"
    2. A new smaller window will pop up. Press on " Accept". After reading the contents.
    3. Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
    4. Click on " Next"->>" Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to " extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
    5. Then click on " My Computer". And the scan will start.
    6. Once finished, save a log as ". txt" to the desktop.

Copy and post the results of the Kaspersky Online scan

Not too bad, a little clean up

1.
  • 1)Rerun Killbox
    2) Double Click Killbox.exe to run it
    3)Select " Delete on Reboot", and then select "All files".
    4) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnll.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\p6.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\p5.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\p4.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\p1.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\p2.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\p3.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\bps1.exe

    5) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose " Paste from Clipboard".
    6) Click the red-and-white " Delete File" button.  Click " Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt.  Click " No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

Reboot your PC ->> Rerun Hijackthis ->> and Post a fresh Hijackthis log

i don't use one, probably not a good idea! i usually just run spybot and adaware every week or so, or whenever i think something is wrong. what do you recommend? is the system clean now? thank you so much for all your help, my computer seems to be back to normal and startup is A LOT faster.

Yes it's a must have.

Go HERE and download AVG free
Download it, install it. Update it and run a full system scan.

Once done, Rerun Hijackthis and post a fresh Hijackthis log so I can see that it installed properly

ok done. when i did the scan it found the same 8 viruses but it found them in killbox and deleted them. is that what it should have done? i hope so! here is the new log:

There are some final notes:
Disable and Enable System Restore
  • Lets create a clean System Restore point
    the instructions are here
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • Open Internet Explorer click Tools->> Options.
    Click Security tab
    Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    Click Custom Level.
    Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    When all these settings have been made, click OK.
    If it prompts you to save the settings, press Yes.
    Next press Apply and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page
Update your Anti Virus Software

Use and maintain a Firewall such as ZoneAlarm
  • The Windows Firewall is good at blocking incoming threats, but not outgoing threats such as "Backdoor Trojans"
    Some others are
    Sygate
    And
    Sunbelt personal
    All of which are free
Install IE SPYAD for protection against innocent looking websites that are not innocent

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently for critical updates

Backup your Important Documents and Files on a regular basis
  • To a disc or a USB key, not your Hardrive
