windows media player not working

Audio comes on, but no video.  files download correctly, and you can see a screen, but no video plays.   Quicktime still works, and realplayer at times, but mediaplayer is kaput!!

This does not sound like a CD-drive related issue. I would try posting your problem in the Windows XP forum.

Hi there,
Do you have windows media player 11. Also please specify if you are playing DVDs or Video cds. That do not display the video.

Hi,
 
I have two separate issues.   (I guess I should have clarified better)
 
The first issue is with the cd player.   It is not recognized by the computer.   When I put a audio cd in to download, I can hear it turning in the player, but then nothing happens.   I opened up my itunes and tried to burn a cd, and it states that there is no player.
 
My other issue is that when someone sends me a media file, when it goes to play, the audio comes on, but the screen stays black.  I can see that there is a screen there, but nothing comes on it.

Let us first try resolving the CD drive issue. Check in the device manager if the cd dvd rive is listed. Check if it has any yellow marks. If it does, uninstall the drive by right clicking on it and uninstalling.
 
Then, follow these steps.
 

Step 1: Start Registry Editor

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. Registry Editor starts.

Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry

1.In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

2.Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.

3.Expand Control, and then expand Class.

4.Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Do not expand this key.

5.In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters and Lower filters and delte them.

Note An UpperFilters.bak or LowerFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. Delte these also.

    

6.When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the UpperFilters registry entry:

Are you sure you want to delete this value?

Click on Yes and the entries will be removed.

Now exit the registroty editor and go to the device manager. Click on Action tab and then click "Scan for hardware changes" 

This shoudl bring the drive back. Then try playing the cd.

You might still get the issue that the drive is not detctedin software like I tunes. If its does, then downlaod and install the file in the followingn link:

Worked perfectly.   Thank you for the easy to follow directions, and the know-how!!   My cd player is back up and working perfectly!!
 
Now if I could just get the darn mediaplayer to work.   Tried downloading mediaplayer 11, but somehow I'm not able to do that either....

Good to know the drives are working now.   :smileyhappy:
For the media player issue, try to downlaod the file in the following link. These are audio video codecs for the player.
 
 
Downlaod and install it on the system and restart the system after that.
Let me knwo if you have the issue still.

Just so you will know, "Always" just copy & pasted a Microsoft article on the manual removal of the those filters. He should have gave you the link and you could have used the guide.
 
 
The link he gave you for the codec`s is a file download, always be careful when someone does that. I`m not saying the download is bad but you have no way to check it out first, to see what you are installing.
 
This link has the Microsoft video codecs for Media Player, you can read information about first.
