Your system does not appear to have Intel Rapid Start Technology enabled
I got my XPS 15 yesterday. It is pre-loaded with WIN8. When the second time I start the computer, I got this message:"Your system does not appear to have Intel Rapid Start Technology enabled".
I tried to fix this problem following the instruction from Dell support center. In the BIOS menu, I have two options:"AHCI"&"INTEL SMART RESPONSE TECHNOLOGY". I choose the later one, which is the default.
Then there is the problem. In the step of "Shrink the partition volume", there's a note in the instruction that says:"Memory configurations and partition sizes larger than 8192 MB/8 GB are not validated by Dell and may cause an increase in the time it takes to wake the system." I have a 16GB memory(128GB SSD+1TB HDD). Does this mean I will slow the system down with the Rapid Start Technology?! It's hard to believe. Why is that?

Hi OSPREY4:
Thank you for your reply! I've figured it out later on. I mistakenly deleted the hibernation partition when I was setting up the disk partition.
When I was trying to retrieve the hibernation partition on my SSD, I failed in the step of "set id=84 override". Hence I transferred my disk from GPT to MBR mode following the instructions below:
First open cmd.exe and type in "disk part"
At the DISKPART> prompt, type the following commands, in the order shown:
DISKPART>list disk
DISKPART>select disk X
(X is the disk number where you want to create the store partition. Refer to results from “list disk”
for exact disk number. Disk must be an SSD)
DISKPART>clean
DISKPART>create partition primary size=16384
DISKPART>detail disk
DISKPART> select Volume Z
(Z is Volume of your store partition. Refer to results from “detail disk” for exact volume number)
DISKPART>set id=84 override
(The id must be set to 84)
Since my computer is pre-loaded with Intel Rapid Start Technology, everything gets back in track after I did the things above. I think my only problem is that I unconsciously deleted the hibernation partition.
Now there is no longer pop-ups upon I start the computer, whereas this technology is no that rapid than I expected.
Thank you!

Hi suecjj,
Please confirm that the system BIOS is set to RAID on mode (might be called Smart Response mode or Rapid Start mode).

Fyi, if you did in fact clean the entire mSATA disk when recreating the hibernation partition, you might have inadvertently disabled Intel Smart Response in the process, which uses a portion of the SSD as a cache for the regular spinning drive. However, Smart Response requires at least 18.6 GB of capacity to work, so if you do the math you won't be able to run both Smart Response and Rapid Start on a system with 16GB of RAM and only a 32GB mSATA disk.

thanks for a very detailed post. However, when I follow the instructions, after the command "set id=84 override", I am receiving the response "the specified type is not in the correct format".
any suggestions?
Thanks!

Sounds like you're following non-UEFI instructions. You need this: http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/rapid_start_technology_user_guide_for_uefi_v13.pdf

Hello Dell,
Every time I start my laptop I get the message "your system does not appear to have intel rapid start technology enabled". I did not understand the solution posted by other gentleman. Could you tell me how to resolve this error. I have a Dell 14Z laptop and OS is Windows 8.1.

If you have an SSD in your system, you probably don't want Rapid Start, in which case you can disable it in the BIOS and uninstall it if you see it listed in Programs and Features. But if you do, the PDF I linked above tells you how to get it set up. It's not a particularly easy process, since as you can see you need to create a specially sized and specially configured partition for Rapid Start, then enable it in the BIOS, then install the application. If you don't feel up to that and can't find anybody to help you who is up to that, the only easy way would likely be to perform a factory restore of your entire system, assuming it was even enabled from the factory. But if that's not an option either, then you'd just have to go without Rapid Start, though as I mentioned above, you can at least get rid of the error message if you don't care about using it anyway.
