roxio creator 2012 does a rollback instead of complete install
I have an Inspiron 620 with windows 7 home premium, and cannot get roxio creator 2012 to install. The computer came with roxio starter (also 2012) from dell, there is a link on the mainscreen when you open starter that offers dell owners creator 2012 upgrade (at $50 off the price) to obtain all the premium features greyed out in starter. I bit and had roxio send me the physical disk so I could install at my leisure. Each attempt to intall failed. I turned off the antivirus, turned off the firewall, turned off windows defender, installed with roxio starter still installed (this is supposed to be an upgrade install) installed with roxio starter uninstalled, even tried safemode installation. None of these helped. Each time it would near completion of install the software would do a rollback and uninstall everything it had just installed. I have since obtained a full refund from roxio and had to go to my dell downloads to reinstall starter (which does install), but I am curious as to what the solution to this is, and if there isn't one, why would dell/roxio offer a product that even roxio tech support couldn't help install?! Has anyone else had this issue? found a solution?

This is typical of problems I've had with Roxio over the years. I finally gave up on Roxio and started using Nero and no more buggy problems like I had with Roxio. I do computer support and do not recommend Roxio to my clients.
It's not really a "Dell problem" - it's strictly a Roxio problem. I've seen similar problems with Roxio and other PC brands.
Keep this in mind, the PC does not have to be compatible with the 3rd party program, the Program must be compatible (and work) with the PC.

Sorry - I do not have an answer yet but folk out there ought to know that I have spent three weeks - every night with at least two exchanges of emails with Roxio support and almost 3 hours on the phone from England at my expense with level one support.
The problem has been escalated to "The extreme level" (Level 2) on more that one occasion and I have tried everything that you will see written about before, such as safe mode, disabling AV and disabling .NET files - even setting up seperate user accounts - and finally trying it on my laptop - and nothing will get it past when it gets to "updating component registration", It installs to there and then rolls back - every time.
Roxio have tried everything from all different angles.
They are not the quickest in getting back to you.
I am again at level two - it's been more tha 48 hours since I last heard from them so I called again to give them a shove.
Believe me no-one can have been more patient and couteous than me but I am still waiting.
I run a website for a kite display team which receives over 600 hits per week and have had over 50,000 hits on my You Tube, Kite Display Team channel - I will soon be changing from Mr Mild Manners and letting a few people know how I really feel.

As I stated it's Roxio, not Dell. You are focusing your anger on the wrong company. The Dell supplied Windows is EXACTLY the same as an OEM Retail version you would purchase from Microsoft or a Microsoft retailer.
In fact, if you want to reinstall Windows 7, you can download Windows 7 (same version as you have such as Home or Pro) from the Microsoft on-line supplier, burn the downloaded Windows 7 to an iso DVD and install that if needed, using the Dell Product Key code found on the PC. HERE is the site.

From what I wrote, did it seem like I was having a go at Dell???
I was just trying to save people the same Roxio frustrations as me - if I ever get an answer that cures my problem I will post it here.
Thanks for the info about Windows 7 but I am running Vista Home Premium.
However, I'm not sure that I want to get in to downloading trial versions and having to reset expiry dates.
I phoned Roxio again to ask why they were not replying to my emails (I have a case number) and all I got was scripted answers about how they are looking in to the problem and will reply!
I have heard nothing for three days now!!!
I hope they can use the experience of finding a resolution to what seems to be a problem lots of others are experiencing.
One of the first things they got me to do was to remove the Roxio software that came preloaded with my computer.
I did find that quite useful but now I don't even have that!

As most that would be purchasing the new Roxio software are Windows 7 users, they may not have the same problems as you are having with your Vista system.
Although not directly related, you may want to consider upgrading to Windows 7 if your hardware is compatible and you have the needed RAM. Windows 7 is " Vista improved".

My wife has W7 on her lap top - I can't see that an upgrade would make a lot of difference for my requirements.
Unfortunately, the threads that I continue to read - hoping, perhaps in vain, that someone finds a fix - the problem exists over several systems including Windows 7 but I do appreciate your advice.

Instead of laptop read notebook.
There is no disc facility on her machine.
Yes I probably could copy it to a memory stick but I don't believe that the notebook is powerful enough to run the software - I'll check it out later and then see if I am allowed to use it!

Just to see, have you tried installing it on your wife's Windows 7 Laptop? It would be interesting to know if it will install OK on her Laptop. Create a System Restore point first, so you can get the PC back to how it was before the Install if it has problems.
How to create system restore point in Windows 7 (May also be applicable to Vista).
If you ever need to use System Restore, either in Vista or Windows 7, it can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools. System Restore is a "fall back" to an earlier time and does not delete user data, e-mails, etc.

I doubt that it will run on a notebook as they normally have a limited version of Windows 7 on them, not the full version.

Yes you are right - the notebook is not a suitable vehicle to run this software - it's a pity that my work laptop is Vista because failing to get it to run on that points toward Vista.
However, the system requirements on the box go back to XP 32 bit!
Roxio have finally contacted me again but just to say hat they are working on it.
I have suggested they send me the basic 2012 version (not Pro) so that at least I can catch up with some of my editing and get used to the software - its been more than three weks now!
I suggested that I could also report if the fault was in that software too and, if it wasn't, and it ran OK, then perhaps I could try upgrading to Pro from there.
I may be grasping at straws here but that's no more than they have been doing!
This problem was there before I came on the scene - I get the idea that other people getting having the same difficulties must have gone for refunds and moved on to other products and then the Roxio technicians have not continued in finding a resolution because the case was then closed leaving them with nothing to book their time to - It gets unbelievably daft like that in some companies!
I work in sales when I am not flying kites so I don't give up easily - I'll hang in there for a while longer yet - Interesting point you made earlier about it being a Roxio problem and not the computer - I like that!

This is NOT a "Dell" Issue. I have my "Own" Desktop, meaning I built it myself, and have the same issue. This is a compatibility issues with your user ID configuration. Somewhere, somehow, at sometime you installed some widget in the past that Roxio 2012 is referencing and is not compatible with. I spoke to Roxio for a couple of days, tried to delete every temp file, old file, unused file, etc, and I could not overcome this issue. Resolution.......create a new user ID, install for general use on the desktop, and log back into your normal ID for use. Installation was smooth sailing.
BTW, For performance, compatibility, and stability reasons alone I would suggest upgrading to Windows 7 even if it does not offer any more functionality utility to yourself.

I use Nero, I gave up on Roxio about 5 years ago.
There are some free CD/DVD burning programs that you can install and use while you are waiting. ImgBurn is one that is popular. Another for CD's, that sort of has a Roxio look is CDBurnerXP

Thanks for your input ocfra.
If you go back through the threads on this you will see that I am not blaming Dell for Roxio's inability to solve what seems to be a problem to many people.
I have also noted that I have tried your method of a seperate user account - which also did not work - I even tried another computer and set up a seperate user account on that one too but here I still am!
Other users, including yourself it seems, have problems even with W7 (previously mentioned) but, if they say on the box that it will run with my system, then so it should!
My son has his own media projects business (therefore pretty much of a whizz at these things) and will probably take a look at this for me at the weekend.
Please keep your eye on this thread and I will let you know what works.
The latest from Roxio is a link they sent me to an on line "Fix it" programme run by Microsoft - they are now telling me to ask Microsoft - Nooooo Roxio - it's your problem - not theirs!!!
Anyway - I ran it and it reported 'No Problems'

The latest Roxio Nero version is aimed toward HD Video and has a lot of support for that. It wil even burn blu-ray discs.
I have a recording studio and have been using Nero, as I noted for the last 5 years, and no problems at all. Nero will even burn to multiple discs at the same time (either internal SATA drives or external USB connected drives). I have a bank of 5 PATA style CD/DVD burners (USB Connected) for burning production. I have PATA (IDE) types as they will go down to 8X CD burn speed, which is my Audio CD burning "standard". SATA drives will only go down to 16X and that speed is not compatible with many older audio CD players.

Coincidentally, my son actually kits out recording and radio studios as one of his many jobs in media projects then runs the support so, hopefully he will get to the bottom of Roxio's problem for them this weekend - although I can't imagine he will let them have the solution for free if they are not clever enough to find it themselves - information like that has to be worth something???!
I only burn the occasional music mix (and a couple of spares) for our kite ballets for demonstrations in case the venue only has capacity for disc playout - everthing else gets copied on to my phone or iPod and don't need to have multiple burn set ups.
That might change a bit once I have produced a new promotional video with my new software.
