Problem opening Powerpoint (ppt) files - Text Convertor Not Installed
In my work I get alot of powerpoint presentations sent to me via email attachments, ftp downloads, or transfers from flash drives.
Sometimes (usually at the most inconvenient moment) I cannot open a file and get the message
"Powerpoint can't read the outline from :C\Users...........blah,blah.ppt No text convertor installed for this file type" even though it has the correct icon for a ppt files.
Email attachments via Outlook are the most common failures, followed by ftp downloads, with direct flash drive transfer being the most successful. But I have had failures by all methods
This morning I received a file via Outlook that I could not open, giving the above message . EXACTLY THE SAME FILE downloaded via ftp was opened sucessfully.
Is this necessarily a software problem, or could it be hardware related, say the graphics card. I have already had this replaced because of other issues.
I am using a XPS M1330, Nvidia GeForce8400M GS graphics card, with Windows Vista Ultimate.

It's not a hardware problem, definately some software/configuration issue.
Are you using Powerpoint? (and which version) or are you using the PowerPoint Viewer (and do you have the latest version).
Also is Microsoft Office set as the default for the types of files that office can view (which would include PowerPoint files if the full PowerPoint program is installed).
It would appear to be some type of file association problem since it doesn't always work with e-mail attachments but will work if you FTP (download) the file to a folder or desktop. One thing to try, instead of just trying to open the e-mail attachment, save the e-mail attachment to your PC - either a folder or desktop and then access that saved file and see if you can open it. If that works, then there is some type of file association problem.

its a very simple problem that extension of PPT is not registered in registry. please visit www.computerhelp.co.in and under articles you will find how to register the same so that you can open when you get on your email. Also if you need any personalized support you can contact me through the mail address provided at the first page.
