PowerEdge 6850's with dual-core CPU's?
Hi,
I've got seven 6850's each with only 2 CPU's and I'd like to get additional CPU's for them - how can I tell if my 6850's support dual-core CPU's?
Do I need to find out what generation they are? I don't have easy physical access to them but I've got DRAC and OMSA access to them.
The current CPU's are mix of the following:
Intel, Xeon MP, Model 4 Stepping 1, 3166 MHz, 667 MHz |
Intel, Xeon MP, Model 4 Stepping 9, 3666 MHz, 667 MHz What I'm thinking is to fill up some of the servers with old CPU's and then ideally get dual-core CPU's for the servers that are left without CPU's. Any advice would be much appreciated.

This PDF should help, looks like 2nd gen 6850's can support dual core xeons but you will probably need to buy the kit from Dell as the VRM's need to match the cpu's installed.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I phoned Dell Technical Support and Sales and they said the only way to tell if your system is 2nd generation is through a small 'II' (Roman Numerals) printed next to the VGA port on the back of the server.
They couldn't tell through my service tag and you can't use something like OMSA or DSET to find out either which is a bit annoying as it's not easy to get to my datacentres.
If anybody else knows of a way to remotely tell if a 6850 is 1st or 2nd generation, please post.
Cheers, Michael

I know that the mainboard part number RD318 is a dual core capable mainboard Gen II. If you look at your service tags you can look at the mainboard part number. That is the only one that I am aware of that supports the dual core procs.

Hi,
Thanks for your post - Based on the service tags, I've got one motherboard with:
RD318 Card, Planar, PE6850, 800T
and the others all have:
WC983 CARD (CIRCUIT)..., PLANAR (MOTHERBOARD)..., PE6850, V2
Can anybody else perhaps confirm that the second one is 2nd generation?

The WC983 will take an Intel Paxville 2.66 7020 Dual Core processor. The difference is that mainboard is it is a 667MHz vs the RD318 which is an 800MHz board. So they will both take dual core procs but different ones.
I hope that helps

Yes it does - thanks. It gives me quite a few options for upgrading them.
