Wireless networking lost after switch to 2Wire DSL modem/gateway

Forum friends

I have successfully networked wirelessly for about a year with an AT&T DSL modem and Linksys wireless router. Yesterday we changed that setup to a 2Wire DSL modem/wireless router (to prevent the frequent Linksys crashes we suffered). But now my Inspiron E1505 with Vista Home Premium can't connect to the internet. We know the 2Wire box is working because we have three computers that are online without any trouble: an old XP desktop, another Dell XP laptop, and a Mac laptop. Only the Vista system refuses to connect.

I spent about an hour on the phone with AT&T but they were unable to help.

Does anyone have a suggestion, please?

Thanks

Dan

PS: I find I can successfully connect to a neighbor's Linksys network, but not to my 2Wire.

Which model 2Wire modem/router is it?

Try running the router compatibility test at:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/using/tools/igd/default.mspx

and see what that finds.

Thanks, Steve

I have the 2701HG-B. I'll check that link.

I ran the test, but I'm not sure what I learned from it. I used my Vista machine connected by a neighbor's Linksys network, but I wasn't able to test the non-working 2Wire gateway, of course. MS's list of Vista-supported hardware does not include my 2Wire box, nor any other 2Wire gateways. AT&T, which sells the 2Wire gateway, was not aware of any incompatibility.

Do you have wireless encryption enabled on the router?  What about MAC address filtering?

I don't know about either of those points. I would guess we set it up with little interaction.

I'll check into it.

Thanks

Dan

Update: There were no such options in our setup. It's meant to be foolproof, I guess.

When you switched routers, the broadcast signal name (SSID) changed as well as any encrytpion that is setup on the card.

The wireless card should be seeing the signla but not connecting to it.

Thanks for your suggestions. I read through the links you provided but did not find any advice I could act upon. So I'm still unsure what to do next.
