Gateway Laptop

I hope I'm on the correct forum, can someone help me please?  My son gave me a laptop and it's a Gateway with Windows XP,  he has misplaced the starter discs when he moved. I can not get it to go on. It comes up and says:
We apologize for the inconvenience but windows failed to startup....etc
Recent Hardware or Software may have caused the problem....etc.
Seconds until windows starts up.... and then it counts down but comes back to the same page over and over again.

I would appreciate any help to get it going again - he says it stopped working he thinks because he has too many games on it.
Is it possible to be able to get into it and just clean it ALL out?

Thanks in advance!
Jeanne

Firstly, you'll get better info about a Gateway at http://support.gateway.com/ .

From the Windoze standpoint, try pressing and holding the F8 key during boot up, see if you get the menu to select Safe Mode. Sometimes just booting to Safe Mode, then restarting, clears the problem. If not, then at least you can begin to look for the problem - try rolling back to a previous restore point.
