high-pitch beeping noise that last 3-4 seconds??
Hello, I'm new to this forum and I'm eagerly searching for an answer that Dell was not able to pin-point. I just bought a Inspiron 17R, Intel i3, 4GB RAM. I've had the machine for exactly one week and have noticed several times, this high pitch (almost like a digital watch), that comes on for about 3 seconds, followed by a 'click', as if a disk drive was done working. This noise is coming from within the computer, not the speakers. Yesterday, it did it again, except the pitch changed during it's sound; again, followed by the 'clicking' sound. ANY THOUGHTS?????
The other thing I've noticed (and maybe I'm oblivious to new technology), is the fan on the inside of the computer doesn't stay on all the time. It comes on about once every 3-4 minutes, at a about a 5-8 second cycle. Maybe it's supposed to do that. I'm use to my old machine's fan staying on most of the time, allowing you to feel the heat being pushed out. Not so much on this one.
Now, could these two be related? I trust the suggestions and knowledge of you computer "geniuses" out there and THANK you for any help you can throw my way.
R.B.

Hi, I seem to be having the same issue (the beep and click). It seems to happen once a week randomly and I don't know why. Did you ever find a solution to this problem? If not, did it cause any problem for you later?
I've been trying to record the sound for some time now because I figured it might help technicians if anything.

Hi Terrence,
Please share the system model and operating system installed.
Have you made any recent hardware or software changes?
Are you able to boot computer to Windows?
Please elaborate the issue and try to observe the system to identify if you can locate the part/portion producing beeps/clicking noise. You may also run onboard diagnostic test on your computer. For detailed steps on it, you may refer to link: http://dell.to/OUGnqT
Make a note of error code if any and share the findings.

Hi Chinmay,
I have a Dell Inspiron 15R model N5110. My operating system is windows 7 Home Premium. I have not made any changes to my hardware or software. The laptop is about 4-5 months old.
My computer is able to boot up perfectly fine and everything seems to be working. However, randomly (meaning every few days) there is a random high pitch double beep followed by a click. It appears to have no effect on my laptop. I have noticed that the sound appears to be coming from the area of the fan, which is on the left side of this model. So, it is not coming from the speakers and appears to be independent of them because this sound has occurred out loud when I've had head phones plugged in as well.
Also, I'm not sure if this is a problem, but since I've had my laptop, every time I've run a Dell Diagnostics Hardware Scan the "Targeted Read Test" always fails saying "Module Failed to start"
Also I ran the onboard diagnostic test on the page you recommended. All the tests passed.

Hi Terrence,
I believe you ran the tests from the Dell Support Center. If the onboard diagnostics have passed, the system hardware is fine. You may uninstall the Dell Support Center from the ‘Control Panel’ and then re-install ‘Dell Support Center’ from the link: http://dell.to/RS19Iy Select your region and follow the prompts.
In reference to issues with system fan, please ensure that the vents of the system are clean and allow free circulation of air inside the system. You may use a can of compressed air to clean the vents. Before you clean the air vents of system:
For more information on cleaning the vents, please visit the link: http://dell.to/SAep59
If the issue still persists, you may update the BIOS to latest version. Before you update system BIOS, please ensure that the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.

Another step, you may try is to check the CPU usage of computer. Please ensure you check it when system fan is making noise. To check CPU usage:

Hi Chinmay,
Thanks for your help. Uninstalling and then reinstalling the dell support center did fix the issue with the failed test.
As for the BIOS, I have not tried updating them yet, but I will try and let you know how it goes.
In the mean time, I was able to record the sound as well as another sound. Is there anyway that I would be able to send them to you?

Hello!
I have the exact same problem on a 9-10 month old Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop, with Intel Core i5 processor (2,4GH) and 6GB ram.
It works alright, but since I got it, it randomly makes this high-pitched noise (as mentioned above, the pitch sometimes changes), for 2-3 seconds, followed by a click.
The sound does not come from the speakers, but from inside the laptop, the top left area. Unfortunately it comes and goes too quickly for me to check CPU usage as suggested, or record it.
I was on the phone with Dell tech service, we ran diagnostics (extended too) but found no problem. I later sent the laptop for a checkup, but again, they found nothing.
I just wanted to add my experience, seems to be a recurring problem! Hopefully there is a solution!
Thank you for any help!

Hi Terrence,
You may update the system BIOS and see if the issue persists. Please ensure that the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.
While replying to this thread, you can click on the option to insert image and can upload the audio file. As an example, you may check the screenshot of same below:
@ queenvolcano: I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. In case you are facing the same issue with computer, please let me know. I'll be glad to assist.
Please reply with information.

Hi Chinmay,

http://en.community.dell.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/3518/7801.beep-2.m4a
The first one is the beep I hear every few days. The 2nd one I've only heard once out of the whole time I've had my laptop. Also I ran the bios update, but there has been no change.

Hi Terrence,
There might be an issue with the application running at the backend which might cause this issue. You may perform a clean boot and check the start up programs and services. For more information on this, you can refer to link: http://bit.ly/Vi0QXe
Please share the findings.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15, 7000 series that is about three years old. Had lots of problems initially getting it set up; but, has been a good computer since then. With that said, a few months ago, I started getting this totally random high pitch beeping sound when it boots up. It has only happened three or four times; but, it is a very loud and piercing sound that goes away after a few beeps. Doesn't seem to affect the computer in any way since it starts up fine and functions as normal once it is up and running.. My operating system is Windows 8.1 Home Premium and prior to this last beeping episode, I did install an updated version of MS Office 365 a few days prior.
Other than causing an uproar in the house when the beeping goes off, it doesn't seem to cause any other problems. To me the beeping sound is the exact same as the sound that comes from a commercial truck or piece of heavy equipment when it starts to back up and in my opinion, it is just as loud.
Does anyone have a clue as to what this is or why it is happening?
Thanks

Please listen carefully to the series of beeps and report exact number of beeps. For example:If the beeps are in three then it's an issue / or problem with the motherboard or chipset. If the beeps are in four then it's an issue with Ram / Memory..
