Trying to install external hard drive (USB plug & play) in safe mode ... not recognized.

My laptop froze with a hardware error screen and had to be shut down. Since that time when it restarts, a 1 inch square box appears with an X inside a red circle and an okay box ... any key causes the computer to log off and save settings only to return to the same opening screen with the X- box.

Seemingly, there is no solution to this problem ... IF you know of one, please advise ... so I bought a 500 GB external hard drive to transfer my files to and start over, but there is no set up disc for the drive and for some reason, the "plug and play" also will not work on my laptop (in safe mode). I have tested the drive on other PCs and it is automatically recognized.

I can access my files in safe mode, so all is not lost ... YET. I have tried to download my files to the external hard drive, but it is a USB 'plug and play' device w/ no installation software and my PC will not recognize it.

Please Help!

Go to the manufacturers site and download software from there.

If for some reason you are unable to get your external harddrive to function at all in safe mode there might be a couple of other options.

Are you connected to the internet and do you have an active datasafe account?

Are you using windows vista? If so, you can boot to the Windows Recovery Environment which has native usb storage support and will actually allow you to backup your data. It isn't the most user friendly way to do it, but it should be possible.

Obtaining the drivers from the website as previously posted is probably going to be your best bet and the easiest solution.

Thanks for the suggestions, but the manufacturer's web-site only has a download for Window 98 and I am using Windows XP home edition. I also tried the manufacturer's "technical support" hotline and the were so helpful to suggest I make sure I plugged it into the wall and USB port properly.

Any other suggestions?

Yes, I have a desktop.

How would that work, I have never done so before.

IF it is a virus would connecting the two risk infecting the desktop?

sounds like a virus, do you have another computer to plug the laptop into?
