My LCD screen completely blacked out. Dead?

The other day after leaving my computer on for the day I came back to it and find that the LCD screen is glowing grey at the corners and I can't see my desktop. Then later I discover that my warranty has expired (after my first laptop 2 months earlier was replaced after many replacements, LOONG story) and that I need a new LCD screen. Now I am using an external monitor.

So here I am feeling denied and very discouraged about the reliability on Dell notebooks. I ask now what is wrong with my screen, is it completely dead?

Does it need a certain new component?

Where can I find the replacement and how much?

Is this something I can fix myself?

Thanks for reading.

Do I need a new converter? Flex cable?

I'm not sure but it were the graphic card you probably wouln't be able to see anything on the external monitor either, from my limited experience I would say that it's the screen inverter that went dead, if it turns out to be it then find the specs on that part and search on E bay

Yes, I can use it with my external monitor so I know it's not the Video Card.

How could I test to see if it is the inverter? Is there something I should look for on the converter or LCD screen?

Should I be worried about my back-light?

Thanks for the responses.

My problem started like this the screen started flickering a few times a day during a few days, it was very slight then the screen went almost completly dark, I could see a little bit but realy not much, I talk to an expert who told me that it could only be the screen inverter, I choose to believe him and fix it myself, I found the details of the part and started searching for it, I recently found it and ordered it, as soon as I get it I'll put the LCD back together and then I'll know if the so called expert was right, I don't think there a test you could do to see if it's the inverter, I found a site that showed me exactly how to dismantle the LCD and locate the inverter but since I live in a no men's land there are nobody that I can bring it to to have it checked, as for the back light commun sens would suggest that you check that first before getting to the inverter, how about your waranty maybe Dell would send you what you need, I know how you feel, try not to get too frustrated, after all we ain't gonna bring it with us when our time comes.

My warranty has expired and I don't look forwad to spending $700 plus for a new LCD screen.

How much did you get the inverter for and where did you get the diagrams for installing it?

Thanks for your responses.
