Cannot hear my own mic sound on my headset speakers on XP.

I bought inspiron5100 from USA 3 months back, now i am in brunei.  i  cannot hear my mic sound on my headset speakers. but can record and playback usinf sound recorder. have unmuted all controlsd on volume, but no success. I cannot use telephone softwares like dialpad to make calls becuase of this problem. I am using XP.

Pls let me know if u have a solution.

Dell disabled realtime mic monitoring in their driver so that support wouldn't have to deal with people complaining about feedback.  Somewhere in this forum there is a posting describing a registry setting you can modify to enable a mic volume bar in the playback screen of the volume control.  If you cannot find that post (I'm a bit short of time right now, will try to find it later), you can use a different AC97 driver, which should enable this function, I use the generic Intel AC97 driver supplied with WinXP.
