Second monitor not detected at boot through KVM

I have 3 Dell computers connected through a KVM to dual monitors. With PCs 2 & 3 I never have an issue with both monitors being detected at boot up, with PC number 1, however, 9 times out of 10 at boot up the second monitor is not detected. When this happens if I reseat the cable at the PC, the second monitor is detected instantly. If instead I reseat the cable (from the PC) at the KVM the second monitor is not detected.

Any suggestions as to what is causing this and potential fixes will be gratefully received as it's really annoying to scramble under my desk each morning

And to add to the questions @DELL-Chris M asked:

Are you powering both monitors on before any of the PCs and KVM are powered on?
If yes, has either monitor gone to sleep before you power the PCs and KVM, on or when you switch to a different PC?

What happens if you swap ports used to connect the different PCs to KVM, and to connect the KVM to the two monitors?

Our users will need more data before they can assist =

* What KVM model?
* What two monitor models?
* What three Dell PC models?
* What operating system is running on the three Dell PC models?
* What video card/GPU is in each Dell PC?
* How are the three video card/GPU connecting to the KVM using which ports and cable?
* How are the two monitors connecting to the KVM using which ports and cable?

KVM Model - PWAY 4k HDMI USB KVM Switch 4 port

2 monitors - Samsung S27D590 &  S27B550

PCs are

1. Inspiron 3847 Win 10 pro Version 10.0.19044 Build 19044 -

NVIDEA GEforce GT1030 Driver 20.0.14.7168  (dual monitors always work at boot)

2. Precision 3650 tower, Win 10 pro, 10.0.19042 Build 19042

Intel graphics UHD 630

Copied from System Information..

Installed Drivers C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\iigd_dch.inf_amd64_a78b5433fa210bab\igdumdim64.dll,C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\iigd_dch.inf_amd64_a78b5433fa210bab\igd10iumd64.dll,C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\iigd_dch.inf_amd64_a78b5433fa210bab\igd10iumd64.dll,C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\iigd_dch.inf_amd64_a78b5433fa210bab\igd12umd64.dll

3rd PC was my work laptop (an ancient inspiron) via docking station but I no longer have that so can't give the details.

All video connections are via HDMI cables from the HDMI ports on the PCs. The KVM only has HDMI ports for video.

Both monitors are powered before boot up but may be in sleep.

I'll try swapping ports around on the KVM.

Sometimes but not always the second monitor is not identified when the Precision PC comes out of sleep as well.

Try making these changes on all PCs in this setup...

Open the Windows Power & Sleep screen. Click Additional Power Settings. On next screen identify the active Power plan and click Change Plan Settings. On next screen, click Change Advanced Power Settings.

On that last screen, disable Hibernation, Hybrid Sleep, USB Selective Suspend, and PCI Express Link State Management. Save the changes to the Power plan on each PC and then reboot.

Test your config again...

Thanks Ron, I did all that and moved the errant PC video connections to another port on the KVM and for the first two boots it worked fine. Then this morning, only one display came up. Reseating the HDMI cable at the PC and the display instantly comes up. I am puzzled why reseating the HDMI cable at the PC works but not if I reseat it at the KVM. I shall also try direct connections to both monitors.

@NeilVP  Exactly which of your two PC models, with which video output and which monitor are you talking about? What version of BIOS is running on the affected PC?

Might be just a bum HDMI cable, or maybe the add-in GPU isn't fully seated and locked in its slot or -hopefully not- a bum HDMI port on the video card or on the PC.

Depending on the GPU, some have had firmware updates to fix HDMI "hot plug" issues which might be related to the issues you're seeing...

I have the same issue. Happens with Windows 10 as well Windows 11. Both Dell Inspiron and Latitude models. Laptop is connected to 4 port KVM with USB C adapter to HDMI and HDMI direct. The desktop is connected to HDMI /Displayport-HDMI ..

During switching (after couple of hours) between computers, sometimes the second monitor is not active. I had to manually reset the KVM Switch or unplug-plug the USB -c from the laptop to wake the port up.

Disabled all the power management (no sleep, power management disabled-etc), still no luck. The software/firmwares are latest ... APprecaite any help

@AltDell - Did you disable USB Selective Suspend in active Power plan?

Did you disable "Allow PC to turn off..." on Power Management tab for each USB and each Human Interface Device listed in Device Manager?

All the USB devices are always on (disabled allow pc to turn off ) .  Did not any power management options to HDMI/VGA devices, Not sure whether I have to disable the power management for those as well.

@AltDell  Exactly what PC models and monitors do you have?

Are all of these disabled: Hibernation, Hybrid Sleep, USB Selective Suspend, and PCI Express Link State Management?

The only power management options I know are listed under under Multimedia settings on the same Advanced Settings screen as the options listed above,

Have you tried blocking sleep (set it to Never) on all PCs, but allowing all PCs to turn the monitor(s) off after X min of inactivity?

Do you need to wake both PCs and all monitors before using the KVM to switch them?

These are 27 inch LG monitors- 4K, but prior to KVM never had any issues of one monitor going blank as it was a direct connection from HDMI and DVI/VGA. Dekstop/laptop are never allowed to sleep, always on power mode with all ports disabled for sleep.

WIll try connecting Dell laptop to docking station  and from there feed to KVM.

ALso the wakeup options are different for each device- just in case if the other monitor goes blank.

1. For the Dell laptop, I had to unplug and plug the USB C - which is connected to usb-c->HDMI and USB A port for keyboard. KVM restart does not help here

2. For the desktop- need to restart the kvm switch. as unplug and plug is quite difficult for deesktop.

Hi Rachel,

What are some of your solutions, can you list them so that people will try your solutions?  Also, I am using my monitor and it works well but when I go to change the settings, the system is not detecting my monitor, therefore I cannot use the camera on the monitor since the laptop is not detecting the monitor.  Do you have a solution for this?  When I go to the device manager, I do not see another camera, only the one from the laptop, not the one from the monitor.
