I can verify that it will also run a Xeon E3110 (Basically a Xeon branded Core2Duo E8400 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache 1333MHz Front Side Bus Wolfdale CPU) just fine, and it will recognize it properly in the Bios, and run at correct specified settings automatically.  I am running one without issues in my Vostro 220.

This is being done running the 1.2.0 bios, which is a bios which also applies to the Vostro 420.  You can probably also add any CPUs that the Vostro 420 can run to the list as well for this reason, but I have not personally tested this.

PS:  If you are upgrading the CPU anyway, and have not already upgraded the memory, I would do so now while DDR2 PC2-6400 2GB sticks are still cheap (they will get more expensive with time now that DDR3 is out).  Max it out with two 2GB sticks, for a total of 4GB, which you should be able to do for under $65 shipped if you shop carefully.  Any good quality PC2-6400 (800MHz) 240-pin memory should work, as long as it is specified to run at default JEDEC settings at 1.8V.  The 1.8V is important, as that is what your Vostro's motherboard will supply, and the memory needs to be able to work at that voltage at the default settings programmed into the SPD EEPROM on the memory sticks.  There is a TON of PC2-6400 memory out there designed to run at 2.0V or more, and this memory may not (probably will not) work in your Vostro 220.  If you are totally unsure of what memory to get, buy it from Dell.  If you know something about computers, you can probably save some money buying a good qualifty memory like Cruicial, or certain Mushkin modules (I am running a Mushkin 996587 4GB (2X2GB) 1.8V kit in dual channel mode in my Vostro 220, and it is running beautifully).

Hi Chris I was wondering if I could just install a 80X97 Yorkfield Quad Core Q8400 2.66GHz into my Dell Vostro 220s without further steps or will I need to update the bios or flash it anything like that? What would be the bedt way to go about installing the Q8400 into my Dell vostro 220s cause my Pentium dual core just isnt cutting it. Thanks get back to me as soon as you can I have a good deal on one of these set up and I want to know if I should buy it or not.

I think there were two mainboards, one of which is compatible with the quad-cores.

Do you know the product number of your mainboard?

The Vostro 220s Slimline model specifications, states this model, does not support any Core 2 Quad processors, only Core 2 Duo, Celeron, Pentium processors.

You can try installing a Q8400, but it's an expensive CPU and there's no guarantee it would work. The chipset should support it, but does the BIOS and the mainboard?

I'm thinking a high-end Core 2 Duo would have performance similar to that of a Q8400.

so you guys have said iI cant upgrade my dell vostros 220s to a quad core... but my mainboards number is a g45m03. iI have seen you guys tell peope that if they have this mainboard there is a quad core cpu option. so what is the difference in having the right mainboard but not computer. iI just need the g45m03 mainboard 1.2 version bios and iI should be good to go right? plz let me know when you guys get the chance iI have found a yorkfield quad core for cheap iI would like to buy. thanks yfor all of your input so far.

You could try a quad core ... I am thinking the worst that will happen is it won't work.
