If the monitor USB cable is attached to the PC, the operating system might be picking up the monitor USB ports as new hardware. To test this, disconnect the monitor USB cable from the PCs.

There are no USB cables running to the monitors. I even disconnected any USB or firewire device from the machine and was still getting the add/detect hardware ding.

and you do not see any bangs in the device manager?
