I have a 5 year old Dell Dimension 4500. When I power up the computer, there is this weird whirring sound and the lights on the DVD and CD player blink. They make a weird noise as well. The monitor or the keyboard never come on. Any ideas?
What is the reading of the power button LED, solid green, blinking green, solid amber, blinking amber?
What is the sequence of the diagnostic lights on the back panel of the
case?
Are there any error messages, if there are, please post the exact text of them?
Bev.

The sequence on the back is A- blinking green/yellow, B- yellow, C&D- green.
I don't get any error messages because the monitor never turns on(and the monitor is fine-- when I unplug it from the computer, I get the test bars floating around on it).
I have the same issue as Newbie but I have a Deminsion 4700. When I power up the computer the left Power light is green; the right light flashes green and goes off, the DVD light goes green then off. The fan remains on but nothing else comes up.
While going through the sequence the computer beeps 4/5 times.
Open the case and try removing and replacing the memory modules.
Still does not start, again remove the memory modules, reinstall one module, and restart the computer, if the system does not boot, try installing in different slots one at a time, rebooting the system each time.
Still does not boot, then try another module and repeat the process.
Continue until you have identified a faulty module [or slot] or reinstalled all modules without error.

YYGG indicates a memory problem
Open the case and try removing and replacing the memory modules.
Still does not start, again remove the memory modules, reinstall one module, and restart the computer, if the system does not boot, try installing in different slots one at a time, rebooting the system each time.
