Alienware Aurora Slow Peformance

·        I've looking in all posts and haven’t found anything regarding "Slow Performance on Alienware Aurora's".

Since first day I received my computer it felt something wrong after turned on. The first thing I saw was the long time during the BIOS and Windows booting, so I thought there must be something related with the way you guys probably installed Operating Systems, maybe with the "Windows Deployment Service" or something like that? Not sure, so I decided to give a try and start using my new pc( I was very happy to have it). I installed Office, a couple of games, so far so good, but the issue came when I tried to ran some applications at same time in order to test the multitasking functionability and the surprise was when unrar 8GB image game compress files(200MB Rar files) and also copied from local disk to an external hard drive, the computer was completely frozen. So I asked myself what should be the issue if this is an Intel i7 920 2.6GHz and running with 6GB DDR3 1333 RAM, then I compared with my job DELL Optiplex 755 System runing with an Intel Core Quad CPU Q660 2.4GHz and 4GB DDR2 RAM. Why I can do more things on job computer than on my Alienware? So I formatted my computer, I deleted everything, even recovery partition, because I want to install windows from scratch, the installation took around 30 minutes compared that with my old computer with a MSI Motherboard, AMD Athlon 64bit 1.8GHz and 1GB DDR that took 10 minutes to do all process, so that's really crazy. After the installation the booting was faster than before(obviously) but not to much, so after installed all drivers I tried the same, unrar files, open IE, copied to my external hd, steam opened and so what you think? The same thing, really slow performance, does anybody have same problem? Have you really test your computer multitasking? I overcloked the system to 3.6GHz (Dell Forum Overclocked Guide), it made a difference but not what I expected. Now I am really disappointed of my purchased and even more to spent $1700 ($700+ just for a case). You can use GPU-Z, CPU-Z, Fraps or any Futuremark Benchmark tool and can tell you a high score, but if it doesn't reflect what is telling you so What is the point?

Computer Specifications:

Alienware Aurora
i7 920
6GB DDR3 1333
nVidia GeForce 260 GTX
600Gb WD
TactX Mouse
TactX Keyboard
TactX Headset
Samsung T260HD

Should I call tech support? Any recommendation? Any help? Ahything?

Thanks in advanced for any help.

Power off, open the case cover. Look for the video card. Do you see the power supply lead connected to the video card? The lead should be dedicated to the video card. In other words, if the lead has a splitter on it and going to the video card and something else, disconnect the other device from this lead and power it with another lead.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your quick answer.

I've checked cables and one supply lead is dedicated to the video card only. So, in other words it seems to be setup fine. What else should I check?

This is a shot from the hip . But have you  checked drivers ? Also try a bench mark test, and see what your getting ..

You know this is interesting, yesterday I called Tech Support and explained my situation about my computer slow performance, so what they told me is to make a backup, call them back and they guide through formatting my pc. So what really make mad about this is that I told the tech guy why I should formatt my pc again if I already did and even without drivers or any other software installed the computer performance still slow. Not always is Windows, not always is the guy in front of the pc, so what else can be? This is really frustrating, I have been for more than 10 years troubleshooting issues, I work in IT and I afraid to do something on my computer because the warranty.

Hi Kaneda!

"I don't feel alone anymore with this problem"

Well, we both have the same opinion about our systems. I also have a Dell Optiplex 755 - Intel Core 2 Duo Quad CPU Q6600 2.40GHZ and 4GB DDR2 800 at work with many applications load in but it boots up 80% faster compare with the Aurora - i7 920 2.6GHz (Overclocked 3.2GHz) - 6GB DDR3 1333. But to me the boot time is not more important that the performance, productivity and playing which the Optiplex wins in all ways.

I am a 3D Animator so most of the times I am Rendering, decompressing rar files with animations or 3D stuff. I called tech support and asked why this computer is completely frozen while doing decompress or rendering 3d animations? He told me that I need to unistall Winrar 64bit and use 32bit since it is taking down the performance eating the cpu. So I did, but it's the same thing. I asked again, what else? We need to reinstalled Windows from the recovery or dell datasafe. As I mentioned in another post I accidentally deleted the recovery partition and never did the datasafe, but guess what? I have the Dell Windows 7 home 64bit DVD disc which I used to reimage the system by myself ( though I can do this after 10 years as IT guy) and after that without installed any software, driver or update the performance still same thing, IE8 takes a long time to open, Windows takes to boot up same and if I want to "many things at the same time" like have two IE open and try to decompress again windows die, the system monitors shows no CPU usage or a lot of memory consume. So I still with the same issue. I decided to overclocked the system and it increased performance in 10 - 20%, but that's it.

I also checked power supply, but cables shows to be fine and there is only one lead dedicated to the nVidia 260.

PD. Do not reimage/formatt/restore/recover your system without call Tech Support, to avoid any issue with warranty.

If you remove the Command Center and reboot. Does the PC run faster with it uninstalled?

Chris

regarding my situation the tech support guy thought my issues was my own software problems causing the system to be slow so i let him take command and he disabled all the software i put in it it made no difference so i was told the only option was a complete install not a recovery as stated in my post by reformatting and reinstalling has made a 80% improvement  with my booting up times hope that helps

wel doesn't dell test these systems when the leave the factory ? i don't have my alienware that long, 2 months, and have the speed issue since i unpacked the pc,

first i had an issue with the pc rebooting while it whas in the bios splash screen, a dell tech told me to deinstall control center reboot and instal it again problem solved but in total my alienware stays wel over 20 sec's in the bios screen before going to windows.

ive updated the control center yesterday , no changes , i've updated my bios ( whas still running on version 4  ) no luck . i've checked the power cables all good.

so what's next ?  is it an maybe an incompatible issue with our video cards perhaps ?  nvidia 260 ?

20 secs at the bios screen? With what USB devices plugged in? It sounds like the bios is polling a device awaiting a response.

My times:

Bios Boot = 45 secs

Windows Boot = 45 secs

System Ready to use = 40 secs

That's after reinstall windows without with any third party software, drivers or windows updates.

I can say from my end this is not a software issue, even though unistalling Command Center makes windows run smooth.

As far as the boot up times go,I went from 3+ minuits to about a 1 and a half minuites after the last command center and BIOS update . I have tried this with and without USB devices installed . I called tech support and the first time said it needed to be unpluged . That didn't work . Called again and the tech guy said it was a software problem . I ask what software would that be,after talking to him for several minuits he said that he haars it was Mcafee and if I removed it my pc would boot faster . Well it didm't work and now have no way of reinstalling Mcafee . LOLL..
