Race to Glasgow 2014: Lynsey Sharp tells us about her recent warm weather training and fight for fitness

With the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow  less than five months away, our fantastic athlete ambassadors are ramping up their training and continuing to underline the role Dell technology will play at the games. I had to chance to speak with Lynsey Sharp to catch up on how she is recovering from injury in the pursuit for glory at Glasgow 2014!

Here’s what she had to say:

Lynsey Sharp on a hillside overlooking a bayWhen you’re in idyllic surroundings, hard work is often the last thing on your mind, but that’s exactly why I have been out in South Africa recently. Recently I travelled to Stellenbosch for the British Athletics warm-weather training camp where it was great for me to feel part of a bigger team again. Following my injury I have now resumed full training so it was great to be out there with my teammates.

In South Africa my daily routine involved breakfast at the accommodation (where we often had steak available!) before heading to the track and weights room where I sweated it out until lunch at around 2:30 p.m. After lunch there was just enough time to refuel, get a couple of hours of rest and physio, if needed, before I was back in the gym for my afternoon session. As I am building up my training after surgery, my afternoon sessions were mostly on the bike or elliptical doing steady runs. Evenings, as you can imagine are fairly quiet after such a busy day of training. We would often head into Stellenbosch for more steak and then get an early night ready for the same again the next day.

This may sound strange but what I enjoyed most about training camp was feeling completely worn out. After injury it was the first time I’d felt like that which I knew meant I was getting back to being a fully fit athlete again, pushing myself to the limit. The pain of the effort was offset by the sheer pleasure of getting through it all.

So with great weather, healthy food, fantastic training achievements and amazing company from team mates the only down side was missing my family and friends. However, my Dell tablet allowed me to Skype family and friends (and even my dog, Walter) and also to keep you guys updated on my training via social media! I’m a huge fan of Spotify too so I always have my music playing via the app on my tablet while I am relaxing in my room.

I am now back in Loughborough for another six weeks before I head off to Florida for another training camp. I will hopefully open up my season whilst I am out there and I cannot wait to be back racing! I have been waiting almost a year to race again and I am so excited about kicking off my 2014 campaign – here’s to an awesome 2014!
