Dell’s x86 Server Shipment Growth Outpaces the Marketplace

Dell announced this week that its year-over-year x86 server market growth outpaced the worldwide market and the next two largest competitors, according to International Data Corporation’s (IDC) Q2 2012 Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker. As a result, Dell achieved the No. 1 rank in the Americas with 34.8 percent market segment share for x86 server shipments. Worldwide, Dell gained 1.7 points both year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter. Dell was the only top x86 server vendor to grow faster in x86 shipments than the industry year-over-year, in both the Americas and EMEA.

Also highlighted by IDC’s report is Dell’s sustained leadership in the density optimized server market, which represents compact servers designed specifically for scale-out environments. Since IDC’s initial public reporting of its density optimized server category in 2011, Dell has been the market share leader in this category for 10 of the past 12 quarters and currently holds 54.2 percent market share in this segment worldwide. This is supported by year-over-year market share gains in the Americas and EMEA by 19.7 points and 17.0 points, respectively. According to the report, the density optimized server market grew worldwide and posted year-over-year shipment growth of 38.9 percent. This growth was driven by the Americas, which made up 70.4 percent of worldwide units in Q2 2012.
