Dell PowerFlex Appliance with PowerFlex 4.x Administration Guide

Create a thin clone using a snapshot

Thin clones are writeable copies of a snapshot.

About this task

Unlike a full clone, a thin clone is a space efficient copy that shares data blocks with its parent object and not a full backup of the original resource.

Thin clones retain full read access to the original resource. You can modify the data within the thin clone while preserving the original snapshot.

Using thin clones, you can establish hierarchical points in time to preserve data over different stages of data modifications. If the parent resource (snapshot) is deleted, the thin clone is unaffected.

Steps

  1. Log in to PowerFlex Manager.
  2. Click File > File Systems.
  3. Select the file systems from the list, click View Details > Snapshots and select the snapshot to create the thin clone.
  4. Click Repurpose > Create Thin Clone Using Snapshot.
  5. Select the NAS server from the drop-down menu and provide the required information.
  6. Click Clone.
  7. To view the new thin clone, go to the file system list.
