Upgrade VSI using Package

Use the procedure in this topic to upgrade the VSI to the latest version.

Prerequisites

  • It is recommend that you take a snapshot of the VSI Virtual machine before any upgrade is started.
  • Log out of the vCenter before upgrading the plug-in.

Steps

  1. Download the VSI latest upgrade.tar package from the Dell Support Site or DockerHub.
  2. Copy the upgrade package to VSI Virtual Machine (VM).
To copy the upgrade file from a Linux/Unix-based system to the VSI VM, use the following command:
    scp upgrade-package.tar.gz root@<iapi-ip>:/root

To copy the upgrade file from a Windows based system to the VSI VM, download the upgrade package from Dell Support Site or DockerHub and put it into IAPI VM's /root path (recommended).

NOTE If SSH is enabled, the default password is root.
  3. Install tar on VSI VM. Use the following command:
    tdnf install tar
  4. This is an optional step. Verify the signature of the upgrade package.
See the VSI Security Configuration Guide for more details on how to verify the signature.
  5. Unzip upgrade tar.gz:
    tar -xvzf upgrade-package.tar.gz
  6. To ensure that the upgrade script is executable, run the following command:
    chmod 755 upgrade_package.sh
  7. Run the upgrade script. Use the following command:
    ./upgrade_package.sh --upgrade

The upgrade script backs up and renames the VSI 8.x docker image, lay down the new docker image. The script also restores the necessary files to a backup folder. An example for the folder name, <iapi-before-upgrade-20190412194829>

NOTE You can also restore the application.conf and SSL certificates after the completion of upgrade. Use the restore command with the .tar file that resides in the backup folder:
    ./upgrade_package.sh --restore ./<20190412194829.tar>
  8. Refresh the VSI plug-in extension on vCenter:
    • If you have a current vCenter already open but you do not see the refresh plugin message, log out and log back in to refresh the plug-in.
    • To re-register the plugin extension on vCenter, run the following command:
      python3 /opt/scripts/register_extension.py -ignoressl true -vcenter <vc-ip> -username <vc-username> -password <vc-password>
