PDF

Data Processing Unit

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0 supports Data Processing Unit (DPU) from NVIDIA and Pensando SmartNIC devices. DPU devices are based on PCIe form factor which can be installed or configured to the PowerEdge servers which help in offloading networking and security services from the CPU.

Data Processing Unit supported cards:
  1. Pensando DSC2-25 Dual Port 25 GbE
  2. Pensando DSC2-100 Dual Port 100 GbE
  3. NVIDIA Bluefield-2 Dual Port 25 GbE (Supported minimum ESXi version build : 8.0b - Build 21203435)
The following requirements must be met before DPU deployment:
  • To enable the operating system baseboard management controller (BMC) pass-through (USB NIC) for communication between the host operating system and iDRAC in the system BIOS.
  • To enable the global single root I/O virtualization (SRIOV) in the system BIOS.
  • To view the DPU firmware, supported system versions, and the systems supporting distributed service engine (DSE), see VMware Compatibility Guide.
  • Uniform pass through (UPTv2) supported guest operating systems for DSE, see Distributed Services Engine (DSE) UPTv2 VMXNET3 driver requirements (90548).
NOTE:For more information about DSE features, see vSphere on vSphere Distributed Services Engine.
NOTE:For more information about DPU, see Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 9 User's Guide at Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller User's Guide
