Replace a Single Storage Controller

A storage controller in a dual-controller storage system can be replaced without shutting down the storage system.

Prerequisites

  1. Use SupportAssist to send diagnostic data to Dell Technical Support Services.

  2. Shut down the storage controller using the Dell Storage Manager .

About this task

You can replace a single storage controller without shutting down a dual-controller storage system.
CAUTION To prevent a thermal shutdown of the storage system, a storage controller must be replaced within three minutes of it being removed.

Steps

  1. Ensure that all the cables connected to the storage controller are labeled.
  2. Disconnect the cables from the storage controller that was shut down.
  3. Remove the battery from the storage controller.
  4. Squeeze the release tab on the storage controller release lever and pull the release lever away from the chassis.
NOTE Wait until all the storage controller indicators are off before removing the storage controller.
  5. Grasp the release lever, and pull the storage controller away from the chassis.

CAUTION To prevent a thermal shutdown of the storage system, a storage controller must be replaced within three minutes of it being removed.
  6. Locate the battery removed earlier, and insert it into the replacement storage controller.
    1. Align the battery with the slot on the storage controller.
    2. Slide the battery into the storage controller until the release tab clicks into place.
  7. Insert the replacement storage controller into the chassis until it is fully seated.
NOTE The bottom storage controller is installed upside down.
  8. Reconnect the cables to the storage controller.
  9. Push the release lever toward the chassis until it clicks into place.
The storage controller is powered on.
NOTE When a storage controller is powered on, a one‐minute delay occurs while the storage controller prepares to boot. During this time, the only indication that the storage controller is powered on are the LEDs on the storage controller. After the one‐minute delay, additional LEDs and fans turn on to indicate that the storage controller is starting up.
  10. If the Storage Center software on the replacement storage controller is Storage Center 6.5.10, the storage system automatically updates the Storage Center software on the replacement storage controller to the software version on the existing storage controller.
However, the chassis firmware on the replacement storage controller is not updated when the Storage Center software is updated. To update the chassis firmware on the storage controller, perform the following steps after the Storage Center software update completes:
    1. Establish a serial connection to the replacement storage controller.
    2. Press Enter several times to initiate the connection to the storage controller.
    3. Log in to the storage controller using the Storage Center login and password.
    4. From the serial connection, type chassis update enable and press Enter.
    5. From the serial connection, type —reset and press Enter.
The storage system updates the chassis firmware on the replacement storage controller.
  11. If the Storage Center software on the replacement storage controller is earlier than Storage Center 6.5.10, the storage controller must be updated to the Storage Center software version on the existing storage controller using an ISO image.
To avoid performing multiple Storage Center updates, update the storage controller to an officially released version of the Storage Center software.
    1. Establish a serial connection to the replacement storage controller.
    2. Press Enter several times to initiate the connection to the storage controller and ensure that the <Safe Mode> prompt is displayed.
    3. Specify a BMC IP address on the replacement storage controller. For instructions, see the SC4020 Storage System Virtual Media Update Instructions.
    4. Use an ISO image to update the Storage Center software on the replacement storage controller to the software version on the existing storage controller. For instructions, see the SC4020 Storage System Virtual Media Update Instructions.
CAUTION Do not disconnect the power, or reset the storage controller while performing the Storage Center software update.
NOTE The Storage Center software update on the replacement storage controller takes approximately 15 to 45 minutes to complete. If the software is updated from Storage Center 6.5 or 6.6 to Storage Center 6.7.5 or later, hardware firmware updates are applied to the Storage Center. Applying the firmware updates to the Storage Center hardware takes approximately one hour to complete.
  12. In the Dell Storage Manager , ensure that the replacement storage controller is recognized and the status is Up.
  13. Clear the swap status for the replacement storage controller I/O module.
    1. Click the Hardware tab.
    2. In the Hardware tab navigation pane, expand the Enclosure node.
    3. Select the I/O Modules node.
    4. In the right pane, right-click the replacement I/O module, and select Request Swap Clear.
    5. Click the Alerts tab.
    6. Right-click the alerts for the I/O module, and select Acknowledge Alert.
NOTE The alerts might not appear immediately. If the alerts do not appear, wait 10 seconds and then click Refresh.
