Secure Connect Gateway 5.x — Virtual Edition Deployment Guide

Install Secure Connect Gateway on a system running Linux using a Podman engine for nonroot users

Prerequisites

  • Podman runtime version 4.0.0 or later must be installed on the system.
  • The system must support a 64-bit Linux distribution to install Podman.
  • IP forwarding must be enabled on the Linux operating system.
  • The cgroupVersion used by Podman must be v2.
  • The system must have the required CNI plug-ins.
  • The following ports must be open for successful installation of secure connect gateway— 21, 25, 443, 9443, 8443, 5400-5413, 5700-5705, 9001, 162.
  • For hardware prerequisites, see System requirements.

About this task

Secure connect gateway has been validated to function on the following Linux operating systems:

  • SLES 15SP5
  • Debian 11
  • CentOS 8.0
  • RHEL 9.1
  • Ubuntu 22.04

For a complete list of Linux distributions that support Podman, see Podman Installation Instructions.

Steps

  1. The following steps must be followed initially by the root user to enable access to nonroot users:
    1. To enable the kernel to route requests between multiple internal N/W interfaces local to the virtual appliance, modify the command /etc/sysctl.conf and add the following to enable IPV4 and IPV6: net.ipv4.conf.all.forwarding=1, net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding=1, and net.ipv6.conf.default.forwarding=1.
    2. To enable privileged port access for the nonroot user, modify the command /etc/sysctl.conf and add the following net.ipv4.ip_unprivileged_port_start=21.
NOTE: Secure connect gateway supports alerts on ports 443, 21, 25 and SNMP Trap on port 162.
    3. If the required ports are not accessible from a nonroot appliance, run the specific command for the required port:
      • firewall-cmd --add-port=5700-5705/tcp
      • firewall-cmd --add-port=162/tcp
      • firewall-cmd --add-port=162/udp
      • firewall-cmd --add-port=9443/tcp
      • firewall-cmd --add-port=8443/tcp
      • firewall-cmd --add-port=443/tcp
      • firewall-cmd --add-port=21/tcp
      • firewall-cmd --add-port=25/tcp
      • firewall-cmd --add-port=5400-5413/tcp
      • firewall-cmd --runtime-to-permanent
    4. To provide the nonroot user recursive permission to the /etc/containers/ folder, run the chmod -R 777 /etc/containers command.
  2. Download the secure connect gateway Podman edition for Linux from Dell EMC Online support and save the download package on a Linux system running Podman.
  3. Run the chmod +x ./SCG-5.xx.xx.xx.bin command to change the permission of the installer.
  4. To run the installer:
    1. Run the ./SCG-5.xx.xx.xx.bin --install command.
    2. Run the bash ./SCG-5.xx.xx.xx.bin --install command for Debian-based Linux distributions such as Ubuntu.

Results

A message is displayed after the installation is complete and the secure connect gateway service is automatically started.
NOTE: To uninstall secure connect gateway, run the ./SCG-5.xx.xx.xx.bin --uninstall command.
