Upgrade the ESXi and SDC versions on the node

Perform the following tasks to upgrade the ESXi and SDC versions on the node you just prepared in the previous task.

Steps

  1. To optionally list the profile of the ESXi zip archive, run:

Perform the following tasks to upgrade the ESXi and SDC versions on the node you just prepared in the previous task.

esxcli software sources profile list -d /vmfs/volumes/scaleio-datastore/<VMWare.zip>

    For example:

esxcli software sources profile list -d /vmfs/volumes/scaleio-datastore/VMware-VMvisor-Installer-7.0.0-15843807.x86_64-DellEMC_Customized-A00.zip

Output similar to the following appears:

    Name Vendor Acceptance Level
    ------------------------------ ------ ----------------
    DellEMC-ESXi-7.0-15843807-A00 Dell PartnerSupported

  2. Run the following command as a single line to upgrade the ESXi version:
    esxcli software profile update -p DellEMC-ESXi-7.0-15843807-A00 -d /vmfs/volumes/sio_datastore/VMware-VMvisor-
    VMware-VMvisor-Installer-7.0.0-15843807.x86_64-DellEMC_Customized-A00.zip

The command assumes the path is under /tmp.

NOTE:If you are upgrading from an ESXi version based on a Dell customized image to a VMware-based patch that is not Dell customized, use the --force switch command syntax to force the upgrade to ignore certain dependencies. For example:
    esxcli software profile update -p ESXi-7.0U2a-17867351-standard -d /vmfs/volumes/DS140/VMware-ESXi-7.0U2a-17867351-depot.zip --force

After the upgrade, you can upgrade the specific VIBs manually if they exist in the VxFlex Ready Node driver pack.

NOTE:The --force switch command syntax is also required in cases where the SDC is being upgraded from an ESXi version based on a Dell customized image to a VMware-based patch that is not Dell customized,.

After the upgrade has completed successfully, the following output appears, followed by a list of the upgraded packages:

    Update Result
Message: The update completed successfully, but the system needs to be rebooted for the changes to be effective.
    Reboot Required: true

  3. On the ESXi system where you are installing the SDC, set the acceptance level:
    esxcli software acceptance set --level=PartnerSupported
  4. Install the SDC:
NOTE:You can also use this procedure to upgrade from ESXi 6.x to a later ESXi 6.x version or patch, without the need to upgrade the SDC. In this case, skip the steps for the ESXi 7.x SDC and proceed directly to reboot.
esxcli software vib install -d <Full_Path>

where <Full_Path> is the full path to the location of the SDC upgrade zip archive.

    For example:

esxcli software vib install -d /vmfs/volumes/sio_datastore/sdc-3.5.0.XXX-esx7.X.zip
NOTE:If in step 2 you upgraded from a Dell customized image to a VMware-based patch that is not Dell customized, use the --force switch command syntax to force the upgrade to ignore certain dependencies. For example:
esxcli software vib install -d /vmfs/volumes/sio_datastore/sdc-3.5.0.XXX-esx7.X.zip --force
  5. Reboot the node.

Next steps

Proceed to the next task to return the node to operational state.
