Upgrade the Dell firmware and BIOS—PowerEdge R640/R740xd/R840

When upgrading the firmware and BIOS, first upgrade the iDRAC firmware. After this is done, upgrade the BIOS and any other firmware that require a node reboot cycle.

Prerequisites

Ensure that you have the following:
  • A management server or service laptop from which to connect to the Dell Lifecyle Controller
  • The Dell Upgrade Package (DUP)
  • The iDRAC password for your server

If you are performing an upgrade on a node that is already in operation, perform a graceful shutdown on the PowerFlex node before commencing the upgrade. Refer to the "Reference Topics" part of this guide for more information.

About this task

NOTE:Use the BIOS upgrade and reboot instructions for any non-iDRAC firmware that requires an upgrade.

Steps

  1. In your Internet browser, go to https://<iDRAC_IP_address>, and log in.
Use root as the username and password as the password.
    The iDRAC GUI is displayed.
  2. Click the Maintenance tab.
  3. Navigate to System Update tab, and upload the DUP.
  4. Select the .exe file from the Update Details and select Install.
A job queue is created and the system will restart as part of the next step. After the system reset, the DUP update gets staged through the Lifecycle Controller (LC).
  5. Select Apply at Next Reboot.
  6. If you are upgrading the BIOS or additional firmware, gracefully reboot the server, as described in "Gracefully shut down or reboot a node" in the "Post-upgrade and common tasks" section of this guide.
