Upgrade the Dell firmware and BIOS—PowerEdge R630/R730xd

When upgrading the firmware and BIOS, first upgrade the iDRAC firmware. After this is done, upgrade the BIOS and any other firmware that require a node reboot cycle.

Prerequisites

  • If you are performing an upgrade on a node that is already in operation, perform a graceful shutdown on the PowerFlex node before commencing the upgrade. Refer to the "Reference Topics" part of this guide for more information.
  • You need a management server or service laptop from which to connect to the Dell Lifecyle Controller.

About this task

In the following example, the iDRAC firmware is upgraded from version 2.30.30.30 to 2.40.40.40, and the BIOS is upgraded from version 2.1.5 to 2.2.5.
NOTE:Use the BIOS upgrade and reboot instructions for any non-iDRAC firmware that requires an upgrade.

Steps

  1. From your Internet browser, go to https://<iDRAC_IP_address> and then log in.
Use root as the username and password as the password.

The iDRAC Server Overview page appears. The Properties tab displays the currently installed BIOS and firmware versions.

  6. Reconnect to the iDRAC and log in.
  7. In the Server Overview page, verify that the iDRAC controller was updated.

The following example shows that the firmware was updated to version 2.40.40.40:

NOTE:If you are only updating the iDRAC firmware, there is no need to reboot the node. Instead, you can move to the next node to update the iDAC firmware, repeating steps 1 - 7 for each additional node.
  8. To upgrade the BIOS or other firmware versions, launch a KVM session to the node.
NOTE:A reboot is required when upgrading the BIOS or other firmware, and the KVM session provides a window into the BIOS update process.
    The Java applet downloads.
  9. Enable the pop-up so that the SVM session can open.
  10. On the iDRAC Update tab, click Browse and select the correct BIOS upgrade file—in this example, BIOS_PFWCY_WN64_ 2.2.5.exe.
  11. Click Upload.
  12. After the file has uploaded, click Install.
The BIOS upgrade is queued for installation.
  13. Select Apply at Next Reboot.
  14. Repeat steps 10 to 13 for each additional firmware you want to upgrade.
  15. If you are upgrading the BIOS or additional firmware, gracefully reboot the server, as described in "Gracefully shut down or reboot a node" in the "Post-upgrade and common tasks" section of this guide.
