Increase SVM system disk size

Increase SVM system disk size to at least 16 GB before upgrading your PowerFlex system.

Prerequisites

  • Login credentials to the vCenter are required.
  • Credentials for SSH root access to each SVM are required.

About this task

The system disk size of the SVM must be increased from 8 GB to 16 GB. This procedure must be performed on all SVMs in your system. All the steps can be performed online, and no reboot is required.

Steps

  1. Login to vCenter, and on each SVM, click Edit settings and increase the size of the system disk from 8 GB to 16 GB.
  2. SSH to the SVM using root credentials.
  3. Check if the rpm file cloud-utils-growpart-0.29-5.el7.noarch.rpm is installed, using the command:
    rpm -qa |grep growpart
    Example of expected output:
    cloud-utils-growpart-0.29-5.el7.noarch
    NOTE: In the future this package or a newer one will be part of the SVM patch bundle.
  4. If the package is not installed on the SVM, download it from the following link: http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7/os/x86_64/Packages/cloud-utils-growpart-0.29-5.el7.noarch.rpm. Then install it:
    1. Install the package using the command:
      rpm -ivh <package name>
  5. Execute the command:
    echo 1>/sys/class/block/sda/device/rescan
    The increased drive size will be reflected in the operating system, and the growpart command will now work as expected.
  6. Grow the system partition (it should be /dev/sda1)
    1. Get the system partition information by running the command:
      df -h /
      Typical output:
      Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
      /dev/sda1        8G  7.6G  0.4G  95% /
    2. Run the following command to expand the partition:
      growpart /dev/sda 1
      Output example:
      CHANGED: partition=1 start=2048 old: size=17817600 end=17819648 new: size=335523                                                                                                                                                             51 end=33554399
  7. Run the following command to resize the file system:
    xfs_growfs -d /dev/sda1
    Output example:

    meta-data=/dev/sda1              isize=512    agcount=4, agsize=556800 blks
                                   =                       sectsz=512   attr=2, projid32bit=1
                                   =                       crc=1        finobt=0 spinodes=0
    data                       =                       bsize=4096   blocks=2227200, imaxpct=25
    =                       sunit=0      swidth=0 blks
    naming                 =version 2              bsize=4096   ascii-ci=0 ftype=1
    log                         =internal               bsize=4096   blocks=2560, version=2
                                   =                       sectsz=512   sunit=0 blks, lazy-count=1
    realtime               =none                   extsz=4096   blocks=0, rtextents=0
    data blocks changed from 2227200 to 4194043
  8. Check the new size of the system disk by running the command:
    df -h /
    Output example:
    Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda1        16G  8.3G  7.7G  52% /

  9. Repeat this procedure on all SVMs in the PowerFlex system.
