Optimize SVM settings

Optimize the SVM for both SDS and SDR. The settings vary for MG and FG.

About this task

NOTE:

For a VMWare HCI use case, consult with professorial services prior to adding cores to the SVM. SDR deployment in VMWare HCI is only supported on PowerFlex appliance and PowerFlex rack systems managed by PowerFlex Manager.

Steps

CPU settings:

  1. From the vSphere Client, in the left pane, select a host that is shut off and from the right pane, click the Edit Settings button.
  2. In the Edit Settings dialog box, in the Virtual Hardware tab, for CPU, select the number of cores relevant to the data layout.
    MG FG
16: 8 for SDS and 8 for SDR 20: 10 for SDS and 10 for SDR
  3. Set the value of the Reservation based on half the number of vCPUs allocated to the SVM*GHz number of the CPU. For example: Intel 6226R CPU which has 2.9GHz frequency the sizing is:
    MG FG
    8/2*2.9GH=11.6GHz

    For 10 vCPUs: 10/2*2.9GHz=14.5GHz

    For 12 vCPUs: 12/2*2.9GHz=17.4GHz

MG with SDR in the SVM FG with SDR in the SVM
    16/2*2.9GH=23.2GHz

    For 10 vCPUs: 20/2*2.2.9GHz=29GHz

    For 12 vCPUs: 24/2*2.2.9GHz=34.8GHz

Configuration parameters:

  1. In the VM Options tab, click Advanced > Edit Cofiguration.
  2. In the Configuration Parameters dialog box, click the Add Configuration Params button.
  3. In the Name field, enter numa.vcpu.maxPerVirtualNode and in the Value field, add the relevant value according to the data layout.
    MG FG
    8 10

SDS threads for FG:

  1. Run the CLI command to set the number of SDS threads for FG:
    scli --set_performance_parameters --all_sds
    --tech --sds_number_os_threads 10
  2. For both MG and FG:
    • Add the line numa_memory_affinity=0 to /opt/emc/scaleio/sds/cfg/conf.txt file.
    • Run the scripts:
      /opt/emc/scaleio/sds/bin/delete_service.sh
      /opt/emc/scaleio/sds/bin/create_service.sh
