Monitoring alerts and events

This section includes tasks for monitoring alerts and events from resources that are installed or automatically discovered.

Alert and event monitoring provides information about the activities and status of your system .

An event is a notification that something happened in the system. Events monitor configuration changes, activities of the system, faults, and errors in the system and send notifications accordingly to inform the administrator. The collated log of events describes the history of the system, and can be used for traceability, root cause analysis, and audit purposes (although there is also a separate, dedicated audit log). The events log describes system history, while the alerts describe the current state of the system.

An event that requires attention generates an alert as well. Other events can update or clear an alert when the system detects a change in the condition that needs attention.

An alert is a state in the system, which is usually on or off. Alerts monitor serious events that require user attention or action. Although the events may be interesting for troubleshooting purposes, it is not necessary to monitor events. An alert, however, is a summation of one or more events that need or needed attention.

The Monitoring menu displays the events, alerts, and jobs on your system.
