Removing the system board

Prerequisites

  1. Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer.
    NOTE:Ensure that your computer is in Service Mode. For more information see, step 6 in Before working inside your computer.
  2. Remove the SD card.
  3. Remove the base cover.
  4. Remove the M.2 solid-state drive, for systems shipped with a solid-state drive.
  5. Remove the VPU card, for systems shipped with a VPU card.
  6. Remove the Battery.
  7. Remove the left fan.
  8. Remove the right fan.
  9. Remove the heatsink.

Steps

  1. For systems shipped with a GPU card, remove the four (M1.4x4) T5 Torx screws that secure the GPU card FPC in place.
  2. For systems shipped with a GPU card, remove the GPU card FPC from the system board.
  3. For systems shipped with a GPU card, remove the two GPU card FPC interposer boards from the system board.
  4. For systems shipped with a GPU card, remove the four (M1.6x4.5) screws that secure the GPU card bridge in place.
  5. For systems shipped with a GPU card, remove the GPU card bridge from the system board.
  6. For systems shipped with a WLAN card, loosen the captive screw that secures the WLAN bracket in place.
  7. For systems shipped with a WLAN card, remove the WLAN bracket from the system board.
  8. For systems shipped with a WLAN card, disconnect the antenna cables from the connectors on the WLAN module.
  9. For systems shipped with a WLAN card, unroute the antenna cables from the metal clips on the system board.
  10. Remove the two (M1.4x4) screws that secure the display FPC cover in place.
  11. Flip open the display FPC cover.
  12. Remove the two (M1.4x4) T5 Torx screws that secure the display FPC in place.
  13. Disconnect the display FPC cable from the connector on the system board.
  14. Remove the display FPC interposer board from the system board.
    NOTE:Technicians must remove the interposer board immediately after disconnecting the display FPC to prevent the board from falling out of the system during subsequent removal procedures. The pins on the interposer board are very fragile. Avoid contact with the pins on the board, instead handle the board by lifting and holding from the edges or the sides.

  15. For systems shipped without a USH module, disconnect the SD-card reader daughterboard FPC cable from the connector on the SD-card reader daughterboard.
  16. For systems shipped with a USH module, disconnect the USH and SD-card reader daughterboard FPC cable from the connector on the USH and SD-card reader daughterboard.
  17. Disconnect the touchpad FPC cable from the connector on the touchpad module.
  18. Peel the SD-card reader daughterboard FPC/USH and SD-card reader daughterboard FPC cable and touchpad FPC cable from the palm-rest assembly.
  19. Disconnect the power button with fingerprint reader FPC cable, right speaker cable, front LED FPC cable, and left speaker cable from the connectors on the system board.
  20. Remove the two (M2x4) screws that secure the PC bridge support bracket in place.
  21. Remove the PC bridge support bracket from the system board.
  22. Remove the nine (M2x4) screws that secure the system board to the palm-rest assembly.
  23. Remove the system board off the chassis.
    NOTE: Replacement of the system board requires further removal of the touchpad FPC and SD-Card reader daughter board FPC/USH and SD-Card reader daughterboard FPC. Refer disassembly procedures of touchpad and SD card reader daughterboard FPC/USH and SD-card reader daughterboard FPC for more information.
