Removing the heat sink

Prerequisites

  1. Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer.
    NOTE:Ensure that your computer is in Service Mode. For more information see, step 6 in Before working inside your computer.
  2. Remove the SD card.
  3. Remove the base cover.

CAUTION:The information in this removal section is intended for authorized service technicians only.

The following image indicates the location of the heat sink and provides a visual representation of the removal procedure.

NOTE:For models shipped with a heatsink labeled “VC” (Vapor Chamber), the heatsink must be removed prior to removal of the display assembly or system board.

Steps

  1. For systems shipped with an integrated GPU card, loosen the three captive screws in descending order (3>2>1) that secure the heat sink to the system board.
  2. For systems shipped with a discrete GPU card, loosen the seven captive screws in descending order (7>6>5>4>3>2>1) that secure the heat sink to the system board.
  3. Lift the heat sink off the system board.
    NOTE:Themal pads (thermal conductors) are on the heatsink. If the heatsink is replaced, the new heatsink is shipped with thermal pads. Ensure all thermal pads are in place between the heatsink and the system board.
