Dell PowerVault ME5 Series Administrator's Guide

Configuring and provisioning a new storage system

When you connect to the system for the first time, a wizard in the PowerVault Manager guides you through the first-time setup of your system. This process is called preboarding and onboarding.

See the ME5 Series Storage System Deployment Guide for details about the options that are presented in the guided setup wizard.

During preboarding you are led through steps to prepare the system for use and are prompted to do the following:

  • Agree to the EULA.
  • Create a username, password, and select a language (once complete, you are logged into the system as this user).
NOTE:The user that is created during the preboarding process has managing capabilities and can change system settings.
  • Update firmware

During onboarding, you are led through steps to configure and provision the system. These steps include:

  • Configuring system settings:
    • Network settings (IPv4, IPv6, DNS)
    • Date and time (NTP)
    • User definitions (local, LDAP, SNMPv3)
    • Notifications (email, SNMP, syslog)
  • Configuring SupportAssist:
    • License
    • Connection
    • Support contacts
    • Summary
  • Configuring storage settings:
    • Storage type (Linear|Virtual)
    • Automatic disk group and pool creation
  • Manual (advanced) disk group and pool creation
  • Provisioning storage:
    • Creating hosts and host groups (naming initiators, assigning initiators to hosts, creating a single host)
    • Creating volumes and attaching them to hosts
    • Summary
    • Repeat

Follow the on-screen directions to complete setting up your system. Once you complete the preboarding and onboarding steps the PowerVault Manager Dashboard opens where you monitor, manage, and provision the storage system.
