VMware ESXi operating system password management

Use this procedure to change the VMware ESXi operating system root password.

About this task

During deployment of PowerFlex appliance, the person completing the installation sets the VMware ESXi operating system password in PowerFlex Manager. When PowerFlex Manager deploys VMWare ESXi, it sets the password in the operating system. When the VMware ESXi operating system password is changed after deployment, the ESXi operating system password must also be changed within PowerFlex Manager to maintain manageability by PowerFlex Manager.

In the following procedure, the terms <OLD_PASSWORD> and <NEW_PASSWORD> are used to see the current and new passwords respectively.

Steps

  1. To change the PowerFlex Manager VMware ESXi operating system password, complete the following:
    1. In PowerFlex Manager, go to Settings > Credential Management, select the VMware ESXi operating system credential, click Edit, change the Password to the <NEW_PASSWORD>, and click Save. See Credentials management for more information.
  2. To change the VMware ESXi operating system root password on every hyperconverged or PowerFlex compute-only node, complete the following:
    1. Log in to VMWare ESXi web interface on the PowerFlex node using root and the <OLD_PASSWORD>.
    2. In upper right of page, click the root@<ip address>, and select Change password.
    3. Type the <NEW_PASSWORD> twice and click Change password.
  3. Test the changes: Even though the cluster is operating properly, because of the time between changing the password in PowerFlex Manager and changing the password in the VMware ESXi operating system, nodes may show a critical error on the Services page in PowerFlex Manager. The following steps return the nodes to the healthy state.
    1. In the PowerFlex Manager GUI, go to Resources page, select the VMware ESXi nodes and VMware vCenter and click Run Inventory.
    2. To confirm that the process completes with no errors, check Settings > Logs.
    3. In the PowerFlex Manager GUI, go to Services page for VMware ESXi nodes and click Update Service Details.
    4. After the Update Service Details process completes, confirm that all cluster objects report as healthy (green check mark).
