Use this task to upgrade VMware vSphere ESXi.

Steps

  1. Use WinSCP to copy the ESXi-X.x.0-xxxxxx.zip patch file to the /vmfs/volumes/PERC-01/ISO folder on the VMware ESXi server.
  2. Using SSH, connect to the VMware ESXi host and check for the uploaded file by typing the following command: cd /vmfs/ volumes/PERC-01/ISO.
  3. For VMware ESXi 7.0 use the following command to install VMware ESXi .zip patches: esxcli software vib update -d /vmfs/volumes/PERC-01/ISO/VMware-ESXi-7.0<version>-depot.zip
NOTE:To perform this command, use the path used to connect from the WinSCP and transfer the ZIP file.
  4. To update the Profile image on the host, complete the following:
    1. To optionally list the profile of the VMware ESXi .zip archive, type esxcli software sources profile list -d /vmfs/ volumes/PERC-01/<VMWare.zip>.
    2. To upgrade the VMware ESXi version, type esxcli software profile update -p DellEMC- ESXi-X.x-xxxxxxxxx-xxx -d / vmfs/volumes/PERC-01/VMware-VMvisor- Installer- X.x-xxxxxxxxx-xxx.zip.
When the upgrade completes successfully, the following message displays, followed by the list of upgraded packages:
  5. Go to iDRAC > Launch virtual console and select Boot > UEFI Device Path to enter system BIOS.
NOTE:Steps 5 through 8 apply only to PowerEdge R650, R750, and R625 servers for the initial bootmode change from BIOS to UEFI.
  6. Reboot the VMware ESXi host. Select Power > Reset (Warm Boot).
  7. Press F2 to enter system setup.
  8. Click System BIOS > Boot setting, select Boot mode as UEFI.
NOTE:Ensure that the BOSS card is set as the primary boot device from the UEFI Device Path under the Boot tab. If the BOSS card is not set as the primary boot device, reboot the server and change the UEFI boot sequence from System BIOS > Boot setting > UEFI BOOT Settings.
  9. Click Back > Back > Finish > Yes > Finish > OK > Finish > Yes. The node reboots. Go to Exit maintenance mode.
