Upgrading VMware NSX Edge nodes

This section describes how to upgrade the VMware NSX Edge nodes to the latest Intelligent Catalog when available.

To upgrade the VMware NSX Edge nodes to the latest Intelligent Catalog, you or VMware Services must upgrade the NSX-T Data Center before upgrading VMware vSphere ESXi on the NSX Edge nodes.

Upgrade one VMware NSX Edge node fully before proceeding to upgrade the next node.

Ideally, all the NSX Edge nodes should be running the same Intelligent Catalog version. The recommendation is to upgrade them both when logistically possible.

Use the following workflow to complete the upgrade:
  1. Stage and upgrade the iDRAC and firmware.
  2. Validate that the vSAN is error free (vSAN storage option only).
  3. Shutdown all the VMs running on the NSX-T Edge Gateway hosts.
  4. Place the NSX-T Edge Gateway ESXi host in maintenance mode.
  5. Upgrade VMware vSphere ESXi.
  6. Power on all the VMs running on the NSX-T Edge Gateway hosts.
  7. Upgrade the iDRAC service module.
  8. Upgrade the VMware distributed switches
  9. Upgrade the VMware vSAN disk format (vSAN storage option only)
  10. Verify the VMware vSAN health (vSAN storage option only)
  11. Migrate the vCLS VM to NSX Edge nodes (vSAN storage option only)
